أَفيIs it for مِثْلِthe like of هَذَاthis الحُسْنِbeauty يُعْذَلُis reproached مُغْرَمُone passionately in love
لَقَدْindeed تَعِبَhas grown weary اللَّاحِيthe reproacher بِهِover him والمُتيَّمُand the enthralled lover
Is a lover to be reproached for beauty such as this?
Is one enamored by such beauty to be blamed?
Indeed, the reproacher and the enthralled lover have both wearied over him.
The infatuated and lovelorn are spent by it.
أَعِدْrepeat نَظراًa look فيهِat him عَساكَperhaps you جَهِلْتهُwere unaware of him
تَجِدْyou will find ماthat which بِهِthrough it تَشْقَىsuffer العُيونُthe eyes وتَنْعَمُand delight
Look at him again; perhaps you did not know him.
Look again more closely - you may have missed it.
You will find what makes eyes suffer and delight.
You'll find that which gives eyes pleasure and pain.
أُعيذI invoke protection for مُحيَّاهُhis face إِذَاwhenever رُمْتُI seek إِنّنيindeed I
أُعيدI turn back إِليهِtoward him ناظِراًan eye يتوسَّمُstudying closely
I invoke protection for his face whenever I seek to gaze; indeed, I
I shield its beauty when I aim arrows at it,
Turn toward him again an eye that studies his features.
Then turn again a hopeful gazer towards it.
وَأَلقىand I find سَناًradiance لوif كانَwere قَلْبُthe reversal of حُروفِهِits letters
لِعيْنيfor my eye بِهِin him لمnot يَشْكُcomplain of وَحْشَتهits loneliness فَمُa mouth
And I find radiance—if 'companionship,' the reversal of its Arabic letters,
I cast a glance as if the heart of its letters
Were my eye's to find in him, no mouth would lament its loneliness.
Were, for my eyes, a cure for its longing and thirst.
