فيin غَزَليmy love verse مِنْfrom لَحْظِglance ذَاكَthat الغَزالْthe gazelle
أَخْبَارُtales صَبٍّa lovesick lover قَتَلتْهُkilled him النِّبالْthe arrows
In my love verse, inspired by that gazelle's glance,
In my love for that gazelle's glance,
are tales of a lovesick lover whom arrows slew.
are tales of passion killed by arrows.
غُصْنٌa bough سَقَتْهُwatered it أَدْمُعِيmy tears ثُمَّthen مَاnot
أَثْمَرَbore fruit لَمَّاwhen مَالَit swayed إِلّاexcept المَلالْweariness
A bough my tears watered; then it did not
A branch I watered with my tears, yet
bear any fruit, when it swayed, but weariness.
when it bent, bore only boredom's fruit.
وَهَبْتُهI gave him ياقُوتَrubies دَمْعيmy tears وَلاand not
يَسْمَحُgrants ليto me مَبْسَمُهُhis smiling mouth بِاللآلْwith pearls
I gave him the rubies of my tears, yet
I gave it rubies of my tears, but
his smiling mouth grants me no pearls.
its smile refuses to glisten at all.
حَلَّhe loosened ثلاثاًthree يَوْمَon the day of حَمَّامِهِhis bath
ذَوَائِباًlocks of hair تَعْبُقwaft fragrantly مِنْهَاfrom them الغَوَالْthe rich perfumes
He loosened three, on the day of his bath—
For three days since its bath,
locks from which rich perfumes wafted.
it's had braids, redolent of musk.
فَقُلْتُso I said والقَصْدُand the intent ذُؤَاباتُهُhis locks
ياO سَهَرِيmy sleeplessness فيin ذِيthese اللَّيالِthe nights الطِّوالْthe long ones
So I said, meaning his locks:
I said, my night vigil for its glances,
O my sleeplessness in these long nights!
"Oh my wakefulness on those long nights!"
