أُقَلّبُI turn over قَلْبيَmy heart شَوْقاًin longing إليْهِfor him
وَأَذرْيand I scatter عَلَيْهupon it دُمُوعاًtears غِزَاراcopious
I turn my heart over in longing for him.
And I scatter copious tears upon it.
وَأَرْعَىand I watch الكَواكِبَthe stars أَنَّىwherever سَرَيْنَthey journeyed by night
وَأَرْقبُand I watch بَدْرَthe full moon الدُّجىnight's darkness حَيْثُwherever سَاراit traveled
And I watch the stars wherever they journey by night.
And I watch the full moon of night wherever it travels.
وَألغَيْتُand I banished مِنْfrom نَاظِريَّmy two eyes السُّهادَsleeplessness
وَأَلَقَيْتُand I cast فيinto القَلْبِthe heart نُوراًlight ونَاراand fire
And I banished sleeplessness from my eyes.
And I cast light and fire into the heart.
إليكُمُtake back (you all) خَمْرَكُمْyour wine عنِّيaway from me مَعwith الوَتَرِthe musical string
لَيْسَis not المُدامةُwine والأَلحانُand melodies مِنْof وَطَريmy desire
Take your wine away from me, along with the strings.
Wine and melodies are not what I desire.
فَماfor no يَقرُّabides سُرورٌjoy عِنْدَwith ذيone who has حُزْنٍsorrow
ولاnor يَسرُّgladdens قَرارٌrepose عِنْدَwith ذِيone who has فِكَرِthoughts
For no joy abides with one who bears sorrow,
Nor does repose gladden one burdened with thoughts.
لَوْif أنَّthat بِالأُفْقِin the horizon ماwhat لاقَيْتُI have endured مِنْof حُرقٍburning pangs
إذاًthen لَفرَّقit would surely scatter شَمْلَthe gathering الأَنْجُمِthe stars الزُّهرِradiant
If the horizon held the burning pangs I have endured,
Then it would surely scatter the gathering of the radiant stars.
إنْif رُمتْمُونيyou want me نَدِيماa drinking companion فَارْفَعُواso remove كَمَدِيmy grief
واسْتَنْجِدواand seek the aid of جَلديmy fortitude واسْتَوْقِفُواand bring to a halt سَهَريmy sleeplessness
If you want me as a drinking companion, dispel my grief,
And call on my fortitude for help, and halt my sleeplessness.
لاnot أَسْتَلِذُّI take delight in كؤُوسَcups الخَمْرِwine دائرةًpassing round
حَتّىuntil أَرىI see كَأْسَthe cup خَمْرِwine الهَجْرِseparation لَمْdid not يَدُرِgo round
I take no delight in cups of wine passing round,
Until I see that the cup of separation's wine no longer goes round.
