أَدُورُI go round لِتَقْبِيلِto kiss الثَّنَايَاthe front teeth وَلَمْand have not أَزَلْI cease
أَدُورُ لِتَقْبِيلِ الثَّنَايَا وَلَمْ أَزَلْ
أَجُودُI give generously بِنَفْسِيof myself لِلنَّدامَىto the drinking companions وَأَنْفاسِيand my breaths
أَجُودُ بِنَفْسِي لِلنَّدامَى وَأَنْفاسِي
I go round to kiss the front teeth, and I have never ceased
I still roam to kiss the folds, I have not ceased
Giving freely of myself and my breaths to the drinking companions.
To give myself to the repentant, and my breath,
وَأَكْسوَand I clothe كَفَّthe palm of الشَّرْبِthe drinkers ثَوْباًa garment مُذَهَّباًgilded
وَأَكْسوَ كَفَّ الشَّرْبِ ثَوْباً مُذَهَّباً
فَمِنْso, for أَجْلِthe sake of هَذاthis لَقَّبُونيthey nicknamed me بِالكَاسِas “the Cup”
فَمِنْ أَجْلِ هَذا لَقَّبُوني بِالكَاسِ
And I clothe the drinkers’ palm in a gilded garment;
And dress the palm of drinking in a gilded robe,
For this reason they nicknamed me “the Cup.”
So for this they nicknamed me "the chalice."
