لاnot أُجازِيI requite حَبيبَthe beloved of قَلْبيmy heart بِظُلْمِهْfor his cruelty
لا أُجازِي حَبيبَ قَلْبي بِظُلْمِهْ
أَنَاI أَحْنَىmore tender عَلَيْهِtoward him مِنْthan قَلْبِthe heart of أُمِّهْhis mother
أَنَا أَحْنَى عَلَيْهِ مِنْ قَلْبِ أُمِّهْ
I do not retaliate against my heart’s beloved for his cruelty.
I do not punish my beloved though he may do me wrong
I am more tender toward him than his mother’s heart.
I am kinder to him than a mother to her little one
جَوْرُهُhis injustice مِثْلُlike عَدْلِهِhis justice عِنْدَin the eyes of مَنْone who يَهْloves (continued in line 4)
جَوْرُهُ مِثْلُ عَدْلِهِ عِنْدَ مَنْ يَهْ
واهُhim (completes يَهْواهُ) مِثْليlike me وَظُلْمُهُand his cruelty مِثْلُlike ظَلْمِهْthe gleam of his teeth
واهُ مِثْلي وَظُلْمُهُ مِثْلُ ظَلْمِهْ
His injustice is like his justice to one who loves—
To one who loves, wrong and right appear the same
—him as I do, and his cruelty is like the gleam of his teeth.
His faults to me are virtues, strange as that may seem
