شَكوْتُI complained إلىto الحَبيبةِthe beloved ماwhat أُلاقيI endure
شَكوْتُ إلى الحَبيبةِ ما أُلاقي
لِسُوءِowing to badness الحَظّfortune مِنْfrom أَلمِpain البُعادِseparation
لِسُوءِ الحَظّ مِنْ أَلمِ البُعادِ
I complained to my beloved of what I endure
I complained to my beloved about the pain I suffer
From the pain of separation, through ill fortune.
From bad luck due to our separation
فَقالتْso she said إنّindeed حَظّكَyour fortune مِثْلُlike عَيْنيmy eye
فَقالتْ إنّ حَظّكَ مِثْلُ عَيْني
فَقُلْتُso I said نَعَمْyes وَلكنْand yet فيin السَّوادِblackness
فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ وَلكنْ في السَّوادِ
Then she said, “Indeed, your fortune is like my eye.”
She said, “Your luck is like my eyes!”
So I said, “Yes—but in its blackness.”
I said, “Yes, but in darkness!”
