How sweet, how delightful is my passion for you!
How delightful and sweet is my passion for you!
And welcome—welcome the sickness born of loving you.
And welcome, welcome to my sickness born of love for you!
غَزالُكُمyour gazelle ذاكَthat المَصونُguarded جَمالُهُhis beauty

That gazelle of yours, whose beauty is so well guarded—
That gazelle of yours, whose beauty is guarded—
toward none but him has my heart ever inclined in love.
My heart has never inclined in love toward anyone but him.
تَجلَّىhe revealed himself علىto كلِّevery القُلوبِheart فَعِنْدَمَاthen when

He unveiled himself before every heart; but when
He revealed himself to every heart; then, when
his beauty captured every heart, he veiled himself.
His beauty took all hearts captive, he veiled himself.

O our beloved ones, will there return within your precinct
O our beloveds, will there return within your sanctuary
brief hours of intimacy—all of them the season of youth?
Those brief moments of companionship, each a time of youth?
علىfor حُبِّكمlove of you أفنيتُI exhausted حاصِلَthe store of مَدْمَعيmy tears
وَغَيْرand other than وَلاكُمْdevotion to you عَبْدكُمْyour servant ماnot تكسّباhas gained
For love of you, I have exhausted the entire store of my tears;
For love of you, I exhausted my whole store of tears;
your servant has gained nothing save devotion to you.
And your servant has gained nothing but devotion to you.
وَحَاشَاكُمُand far be it from you أَنْto تُبْعِدواbanish عنfrom جَمالِكمyour beauty

Far be it from you to banish from your beauty
And far be it from you to banish from your beauty
one bound to passion, his very soul tormented because of you.
One bound to passion, tormented by you in his soul.
وإِنand if تَهْجُرواyou forsake مَنْone who وَاصلَkept company with السّهْدَsleeplessness جَفْنُهُhis eyelid

If you forsake one whose eyelid has made sleeplessness its constant companion,
And if you forsake one whose eyelid has kept company with sleeplessness,
and who refined his love for you until it grew refined—
And who refined his love for you, and so himself grew refined,
وَأَحْسَنْتُمand you did well in تَأديبَهُdisciplining him بِصُدودكُمْthrough your rebuffs

when you have schooled him well through your aloofness,
And you have schooled him well through your rebuffs,
do not forsake him now that he has learned good conduct.
Then do not forsake him now that he has learned his manners.
وليand I have مُهْجَةٌa heart دِينُthe creed of الصَّبابةِardent longing دِينُهاits creed

I have a soul whose creed is the creed of passionate love;
And I have a heart whose faith is the creed of ardent longing;
how, for all time, could it find any path away from you?
So how could it ever find, in all eternity, a path away from you?
