How strange, when your gaze makes bloodshed lawful,

that your reign endures, though it is unjust!

And when the line of down on your cheek comes to renew

your tenure in power, who, I wonder, can depose you?

    تَبّاً له أَعَلَى مِثَالِكَ يَعْذِلُ

    The reproacher ignorantly blamed me for loving you;

May he perish! Does he reproach me for loving one like you?

So his task is to voice reproach with all his might,

and the lover's task is not to accept it.

O countenance of the moon—I shall never turn away

from love of him, nor shall I change.

All people gazed at your beauty and turned

away from it, having praised it and spoken well.

So their account of your face's beauty has a chain of transmission,

and their account of your saliva's sweetness has a missing link.
