    How long shall I remain patient, O you who forsake me?

    Do you think this estrangement of yours has an end?

    وَبوَصْفِ ثَغْرِكَ صَحَّ أنِّيَ شاعِرُ

    But for the ordered row of your teeth, I would not compose verse;

    And describing your teeth confirmed that I am a poet.

    And indeed, because of his cheeks' redness, there spread over me

    A yellow pallor so intense that it bewildered the beholder.

    So marvel at it: an attribute that subsists on its own,

    For my illness has left me with no visible body.

    فإِلامَ يُثْنيهِ العَذُولُ القاسِرُ

    My heart inclines toward you naturally in love;

    To what end, then, does the coercive reproacher turn it away?

    And indeed, I have known fire's nature to be guidance,

    Yet the fire of your cheek leaves every heart bewildered.

    Do not fear a fire kindled in your cheek,

    For the full moon neighbors the ethereal sphere.
