بَدَاappeared وَجْهُهُhis face مِنْfrom فَوْقِabove أَسْمَرdusky spear قَدِّهِhis stature
وَقَدْand already لاحَshone مِنْfrom ليْلِthe night of الذَّوائِبِthe tresses فيin جُنْحِdarkness
His face appeared above the dusky spear of his stature,
His face appeared from above his dark neck
And shone from the night of his tresses, amid the gloom.
And he emerged from the night of returned locks on the wing
فَقُلْتُso I said عَجيبٌstrange كَيْفَhow لَمْnot يَذْهَبdepart الدُّجَىthe darkness
وَقَدْand already طَلَعَتْhas risen شَمْسُthe sun of النَّهارِthe day علىupon رُمْحِa spear
So I said, “How strange! How has the darkness not departed,
So I said: how strange is it that the darkness has not gone
When the sun of day has already risen upon a spear?”
When the sun of daylight has risen on the spear
