شَادِنٌ أَحْوَر جَميلُ المُحَيَّا
He rose, hurrying by night with a cup of strong wine—
He arose to walk at night with a cup of wine,
A dark-eyed young gazelle, beautiful of face.
Graceful, dark-lipped, and beautiful of countenance.

نُقِّطَتْ مِنْ حَبابِهَا بِالثُّريَّا
A full moon of glory, in his palm a sun of wine,
The full moon is in his hand, a sun of pleasure,
Spangled with the Pleiades by its bubbles.
Speckled with the Pleiades through its bubbles.
مَلَكَpossessed القَلْبَthe heart مِنْهُfrom him ظُرْفٌcharm وَطَرْفٌand a glance
مَلَكَ القَلْبَ مِنْهُ ظُرْفٌ وَطَرْفٌ
وَضَعِيفانِand two weak ones يَغْلِبانِovercome وقَوِيّاand a strong one
وَضَعِيفانِ يَغْلِبانِ وقَوِيّا
His charm and glance took possession of the heart,
He has taken possession of the heart with his charm and his glance,
And two weak ones overcome even a strong one.
Yet a weak conqueror overcomes a strong one.
