فَمَاfor ... not أَناI فيin الحُضُورِthe presence of others مُنْتَهِزٌone who seizes an opportunity
فَمَا أَنا في الحُضُورِ مُنْتَهِزٌ
أُمْنِيَّةُwish النَّفْسِthe soul غَيْبةُabsence الرُّقَباthe watchers
أُمْنِيَّةُ النَّفْسِ غَيْبةُ الرُّقَبا
For I seize no opportunity in company;
In gatherings I seize each moment though
the soul’s wish is for the watchers to be absent.
My soul craves to be free of prying eyes.
وَمِنْand of عَجيبٍa wonder أَنْthat أَسْتَزِيدَكَI ask you for more مِنْof
وَمِنْ عَجيبٍ أَنْ أَسْتَزِيدَكَ مِنْ
شُرْبٍdrink وسُكْرِيand my drunkenness عَليَّover me قَدْalready غَلَبَاhas prevailed
شُرْبٍ وسُكْرِي عَليَّ قَدْ غَلَبَا
And it is strange that I should ask you for more
Strange that I seek from you another round
drink, when my drunkenness has already overcome me.
When drunkenness has overwhelmed my mind.
