Tears flow, and the heart is lovesick.

The eyelid bleeds, and love's anguish endures.

O you whose beauty is absent from my sight,

your dwelling and your essence are in my heart.

By God, never was the sanctuary's land crossed

by our mounts without our remembering you.

Nor did a breeze waft from that quarter

without our recognizing it by your fragrance.

May our nights at Hajir be watered

by rain, and may it greet them and greet you.

    Nights I spent in union—

how sweet they were, and how sweet you were!

Our beloved, what is the valley bend, what the winding valley,

what is Rama, what the mountain pass, without you?

This universe stands only through you,

and pure existence is nothing but you.

And on the sanctuary's sandy plain I have a young gazelle,

well versed in slaying the devotees of love.

The heart does not turn away from him in love,

and no one blames it for loving him.

He severs affection's cord—who will grant me justice

against a ruthless one whose glance holds a sword?

To him I complain of what I suffer from him.

Woe is me for an adversary who is himself the judge!
