أَحْلىsweetest الهَوىlove أَنْthat يَطُولَshould last long الوَجْدُyearning والسَّقَمُand sickness
وأَصْدَقُand the truest الحُبِّlove ماthat which جَلَّتْbecame grave بِهِbecause of it التُّهَمُsuspicions
Love is sweetest when yearning and sickness endure,
And the truest love is that which arouses grave suspicions.
لَيْتَif only اللَّياليَthe nights أَحْلاماًas dreams تَعُودُwould return لَناto us
فَرُبَّماfor sometimes قَدْindeed شَفَىcured دَاءَthe sickness of الهَوَىlove الحُلُمُa dream
Would that the nights returned to us as dreams,
For a dream has sometimes cured love's sickness.
لاmay not آخذَhold accountable اللَّهُGod جِيرانَthe dwellers of النَّقاal-Naqa (the sand dune) بِدَمِيfor my blood
هُمْthey أَسْلَمُونِيthey surrendered me لِوَجْدٍto yearning مِنْهُfrom it قَدْindeed سَلِمُواthey were spared
May God not hold al-Naqa's dwellers answerable for my blood;
They abandoned me to a yearning from which they themselves were spared.
وَحَرَّمُواand they forbade فيin الهَوَىlove وَصْلِيunion with me وَمَاand did not عَطَفُواthey showed tenderness
وَحَلَّلُواand they made lawful بِالنَّوىthrough separation قَتْلِيkilling me وَمَاand did not رَحمُواthey showed mercy
And in love they forbade union with me, showing no tenderness;
And through separation they made killing me lawful, showing no mercy.
وَفَّيْتُهُمْI fulfilled for them حَقَّthe duty of حِفْظِkeeping العَهْدِthe pledge مُغْتَبطاًrejoicing
بِهِمْin them وماand no رُعِيَتwere honored ليfor me عِنْدَهُمْby them ذِمَمُpledges
I gave them their due by keeping faith, rejoicing
In them, though they honored no pledges toward me.
يَاO غَائبينَabsent ones وَوَجْديwhile my yearning حَاضِرٌis present بِهِمfor them
وَعَاتِبينَand reproachful ones وَذَنْبيthough my sin فيin الغَرامِpassion هُمُthey
O absent ones, though my yearning for them is ever present,
And reproachful ones, though they themselves are my sin in love.
لاmay not أَوْحَشَتْgrow desolate مِنْكُمُwithout you دارٌa dwelling بِكُمْthrough you شَرُفَتْwas ennobled
ولاnor خَلَتْstand empty مِنْamong مَغَانِيthe haunts of حُسْنِكُمْyour beauty خِيَمُtents
May no dwelling ennobled by you grow desolate without you,
Nor may the tents among your beauty's haunts stand empty.
بِنتُمْyou departed فلاso no طَرْفَeye إلّاexcept وَهْوwhile it is مُضْطرِبٌtrembling
شَوْقاًwith longing ولاand no قَلْبَheart إِلّاexcept وَهْوَwhile it is مُضْطَرِمُablaze
You departed; there is no eye that does not tremble
With longing, and no heart that is not aflame.
فكُلُّfor every أَرْضٍland وَطِئْتُمْyou trod تُرْبَهاits soil فَلَكٌa celestial sphere
وَكُلُّand every وادٍvalley حَلَلْتُمْyou inhabited رَبْعَهُits dwelling-place حَرَمُa sanctuary
For every land whose soil you trod is a celestial sphere,
And every valley where you made your home is a sanctuary.
هلwill ...? عائدٌreturning والأمانيthough hopes قَلَّماseldom صَدقتْcame true
دَهْرٌa time مَضَىgone by وَمغانيwhile the dwellings of حُسْنِكُمْyour beauty أُمَمُnear at hand
Will there return—though hopes have seldom come true—
A bygone time, when your beauty's dwellings were near?
فَالجِسْمُso the body مُذْsince غِبْتُمُyou went away بِالسّفْحِin streaming tears مُتّشِحٌcloaked
وَالقلبُand the heart مُضْطَرِبٌtrembling بالشَّوْقِwith longing مُضْطَرِمُaflame
So, since you vanished, my body has been cloaked in streaming tears,
And my heart trembles with longing, aflame.
لمdid not يُنْسِناmake us forget سَالِفاًwhat is past مِنْof عَهْدِكُمour bond with you قِدَمٌthe passage of time
وَلاnor سَعَتْhastened بِالتَّسَلّيwith consolation نَحْوَناtoward us قَدَمُa foot
Time has not made us forget our former days with you,
Nor has any foot come toward us bearing consolation.
أَسْتَوْدِعُI entrust اللَّهَGod رَكْباًa caravan فيin هَوادِجِهِمْtheir howdahs
مُحجَّبٌa veiled beloved لَيْسَnot تُرْعَىare honored عِنْدَهُin his keeping الذممُpledges
I commend to God a caravan, in whose howdahs
Is a veiled beloved who honors no pledges.
لَهُhe has مِنَfrom الغُصْنِthe bough قَدٌّa figure زَانَهُadorned it هَيَفٌa slender waist
وَمِنْand from غزالِthe gazelle of الحِمَىthe sanctuary طَرْفٌa gaze بِهِin it سَقَمُsickness
His is a bough-like figure, graced with a slender waist,
And a sanctuary gazelle's gaze, languid with sickness.
يَبيتُpasses the night قَلْبيmy heart عَلَيْهِfor him حُرْقَةًin burning anguish وَجَوىًand inward grief
وَقَلبُهُand his heart بَارِدٌcold مِنْfrom لَوْعَتِيmy burning anguish شَبِمُicy-cold
My heart spends the night in burning anguish and grief for him,
While his heart is cold to my anguish, icy cold.
ظَلِلْتُI remained فِيهِconcerning him وَأَمْسَىand became قَلْبُهُhis heart حَجَراًstone
لَمْdid not يَشْفِheal قَطّever مُحِبّاًa lover شَفَّهُwasted him أَلَمُpain
I stayed in torment over him, while his heart turned to stone;
Never has he healed a lover whom pain has wasted.
فَواso, by الّذيthe one whom زَانَهُadorned him مِنْfrom طَرْفِهِhis gaze سَقَمٌsickness
وَأَودَعَand lodged السِّحْرَenchantment فيهِin him أَنَّهُthat it is قَسَمُan oath
So by the one whom sickness in his gaze adorned,
And in whom it lodged enchantment—this is an oath—
لَوْلاwere it not for تَثنِّيthe swaying of رُدَيْنِيِّRudayni-spear-like القَوامِstature بِهِin him
حَلفْتُI would have sworn أَلْفَa thousand يَمِينٍoaths أَنَّهthat he is صَنَمُan idol
Were it not for the sway of his Rudayni-spear form,
I would have sworn a thousand oaths that he is an idol.
