    Between your desertion and separation,

I have melted away from the pain of longing.

By the life of your love, never has

the lover's heart ceased loving, nor meant to.

O you whose stature has mirrored

a branch's form ever since it bent.

I have an eye that thirsts for

meeting you, yet has drunk its fill of tears.

O dark-eyed one to whom I am bound,

dark-lipped, who has claimed me as his slave.

O you who enchant me with supple curves,

before which the dunes' branches have fallen prostrate.

How many debts are owed me by your

temple-lock, which has deferred their payment and curled!

Whoever compares your stature to a branch

in grace has surely gone astray.

You and the branch are not, in my eyes,

supple though it is, of equal rank.

    ءُ وأَنْتَ حَرَّكْتَ الهَوى

    That one was stirred by the air;

    but you have stirred desire.
