Reach him before parting; today is the time to meet him.
And shed tears freely with him; tears are all he can muster.
لَهُfor him كُلَّevery يَوْمٍday فيat الوَدَاعِfarewell مَواقِفٌscenes

Each day he has scenes of farewell
At which lifeless matter, soft and hard, melts.

My two friends from al-Musalla's moringa and laurel trees,
(May al-Musalla's moringa and laurel trees be watered with rain!)

Why did its gazelles shoot my heart there,
Though long ago its lions feared me?

I am cursed with luck such that, whenever I seek a goal,
Its opposite is sent my way by fate.

Do salve love's wounds with a consolation
Whose honey is gathered with the fingertips of wishes.

With you, love's ease and hardship are delightful,
And with you, reproach is sweet, in jest or earnest.

Come, let us renew our union, we and you;
For our counsel has no weight with one who keeps turning away.

You will find it hard to shut afterward.

And many a one takes vengeance on me, my offense in his eyes
Being my speech; yet my heart is this free man's slave.
وَلَوْand if كَانَthere were لِيfor me عَقْلٌsense كَتَمْتُI would have kept silent فإِنَّمَاfor only

Had I any sense, I would have kept silent; for only
Through a young man's intellect is his sound judgment known and discerned.
سَكِرْتُI grew drunk بِأَقْدَاحٍfrom cups وعَيْناهُand his two eyes خَمْرُهَاtheir wine

I grew drunk on cups whose wine was his eyes,
And was love-mad for a garden whose roses were his cheeks.
رَعَىmay preserve اللَّهGod لَيْلاًa night زَارنِيhe visited me فيهِduring it والدُّجَىwhile the darkness

May God preserve the night he visited me, when the darkness
Would have hidden him, but for his wafting perfume.
وَقَدْand already نَظَمْتُI strung together صَدْرِيmy breast عِناقاًin an embrace وصَدْرَهُand his breast

And I had strung my breast and his, in an embrace,
Into necklaces of contentment, till his necklace scattered.
فَقابَلْتُso I faced وَجْهاًa face مُجْتَلىa vision for العَيْنِthe eye بَدْرُهُits full moon
وقَبَّلْتُand I kissed ثَغْراًa mouth مُشْتَهَىdesired by النَّفْسِthe soul بَرْدُهُits coolness
So I beheld a face, its full moon a vision for the eye,
And kissed a mouth whose coolness was the soul's desire.
فَلمَّاthen when بَدَاappeared وَاشِيthe tale-bearer of الصَّبَاحِmorning بِوَشْيِهِwith its brocade
وَنِيطَand was draped عَلَيْنَاover us مِنْfrom يَدِthe hand of الجَوِّthe sky بُرْدُهُits mantle
Then, when morning's tale-bearer appeared with its brocade,
And its mantle was draped over us by the sky's hand,
تَرَقْرَقَwelled دُرُّthe pearls of الدَّمْعِtears مِنْfrom مَتْنِthe blade of لَحْظِهhis glance
فَحَقَّقتُso I knew for certain أَنّthat السَّيْفَthe sword فِيهِin it فَرْندُهُits watered markings
Pearls of tears welled from the blade of his glance,
So I knew for certain the sword bore its watered markings.
فَماso what بَالُهُis his state مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter عُرْفٍkindness تنكَّرتْgrew strange
خَلائِقُهُhis ways حَتَّىuntil تَغَيَّرَchanged عَهْدُهُhis pledge
What ails him? After kindness, how strange
His ways have grown, till even his pledge has changed!
كَذاكَthus رَأَيْتُI have found الدَّهْرَfate إِنْif يَصْفُit runs clear مَنْهلاًas a watering place
تَكدَّرَturns turbid مِنْfrom حَوْضِthe pool of الحَوادِثِmisfortunes وِرْدهُits draught
So I have found fate: if it runs clear as a watering place,
Its draught from the pool of misfortunes turns muddy.
أَقولُI say لِقَلبيto my heart والغَرامُwhile passion يَقودُهُleads it
وسَيفُand the sword of التَجَنّيfalse accusation والتَمَنّيand longing يقدُّهُcleaves it
I say to my heart, while passion leads it on
And the sword of false accusation and longing cleaves it:
لَكَfor you اللَّهGod دَعْleave قَوْلَthe talk of الأمانيwishes وَخلّهِand let him be
فَمَاfor not كُلُّevery مَقْدُوحٍstruck for sparks يُرَىis seen لَكَfor you زِنْدُهُits fire-stick
God help you! Give up wishful talk, and let him go;
For not every struck fire-stick will kindle for you.
إِذَاif لَمْdoes not تَدُمْendure للرُّوحِfor the soul والجِسْمِand the body صُحْبةcompanionship

فأَيُّthen which حَبِيبٍbeloved دَائِمٌlasting لَكَfor you وُدُّهُhis affection
If companionship between soul and body does not endure,
Then what beloved's affection for you can last?
I shall travel by night وَجُنْحُwhile the wing of اللَّيْلِnight يَسْطُوrages ظَلَامُهُits darkness

I shall journey by night, while darkness rages beneath night's wing,
And press on while the sun's heart scorches with its blaze.

Help me attain the heights, for to them I am
Bound in love; nothing can turn me from them.
أَرومُI seek بِعَزْمِيwith my resolve فَوْقَbeyond ماthat which دُونَbefore نَيْلِهِattaining it

With my resolve I seek beyond a goal whose attainment is barred
By death's banner, its pennon casting a fluttering shade.
وَمَاand not شَرَفِيmy honor إِلَّاexcept بِنَفسِيthrough myself وَإِنْeven if يَكُنْthere is

My honor comes from myself alone, although
My people possess distinction whose glory rivals the stars.
وَلوْand if كَانَwere تَحْصِيلُthe attaining of الفَخَارِdistinction بِنِسْبَةٍthrough lineage

Were distinction gained through lineage,
A sword's edge and its sheath would then be equal.
وَلاَand no ذَنْبَfault لِيin me إِلَّاexcept الكَمَالَperfection عَلَىdespite الصِّباyouth

I have no fault but perfection despite my youth;
Who, then, can give me a flaw, or gray hair, to counter it?
