قَابلْتُI met عِزَّpride هَواكُمُyour love بِتَذلُّلٍwith self-abasement
مَعْdespite أَنَّنيthat I فيin ذَاكَthat لَسْتُI am not بِأَوَّلِthe first
I met your love's pride with self-abasement,
Though I am not the first to do so.
يَاO جَائِرينَunjust ones وعَادِلينَand turning إلىtoward النَّوَىseparation
ماthere is no دُونَapart from مَعْدِلِrefuge حُسْنِكُمْyour beauty مِنْany مَعْدِلِrefuge
O you who are unjust and turn toward separation,
There is no refuge but the refuge of your beauty.
وَحَيَاتِكُمْby your lives أَنْتُمْyou عَلىdespite إِعْراضِكُمْyour turning away
عِنْدِيto me أَعزّdearer مِنَthan الشَّبَابِyouth المُقْبِلِapproaching
By your lives, you—for all your turning away—
Are dearer to me than youth as it approaches.
إِنْif تَذْكُرُونَyou remember فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I لَمْdid not أَنْسَكُمْI forget you
أَوْor تَسْمَحُونَyou are generous فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I لَمْdid not أَبْخَلِI act miserly
If you remember me, I have not forgotten you;
Or if you are generous, I have not been miserly.
ياO عُلْوُʿUlw أَيْنَwhere زَمانُنَاour time إِذْwhen جَارُكُمْyour neighbor
جَارِيmy neighbor وَمَنْزِلُكُمْand your home بِرامةَat Rāmah مَنْزِليmy home
O ʿUlw, where are our days, when your neighbor
Was my neighbor, and your home at Rāmah was my home?
مَاhow كَانَwas أَسْرَعَswift ماthat تَقشَّعَdispersed غَيْمُكُمyour cloud
وَمَنَعْتُمُand you withheld الوَسْمِيَّthe first autumn rain عَنِّيfrom me والوَلِيand the following rain
How swiftly your cloud dispersed!
And you withheld from me the first autumn rain and the rain that follows.
كَمْhow often كُنْتُI used to أَخْشَىI fear البَيْنَparting قَبْلَbefore وُقوعِهِits occurrence
فَأتىthen came الّذيwhat حَاذَرْتُI dreaded فيin المُسْتَقْبَلِthe future
How often I feared parting before it came!
Then what I dreaded for the future came to pass.
وَحَذِرْتُand I feared سَهْمَthe arrow فِرَاقِكُمْparting from you حَتَّىuntil إِذَاwhen
أَرْسَلْتُموهyou loosed it أَصَابَنِيit struck me فيin المَقْتَلِthe vital spot
And I feared the arrow of parting from you, until the moment
You loosed it—it struck me in a vital spot.
اليَوْمَtoday لَسْتُI am not أُجابُI am answered بَعْدَafter سُؤَالِكُمْasking you
كَمْhow often كُنْتُI was قَبْلُbefore أُجَابُI am answered إِذْwhen لَمْdid not أَسْأَلِI ask
Today I receive no answer after asking you;
How often before I was answered without having asked!
فَالدّارُfor the dwelling لَمْhas not تَبْعُدْgrown distant وَفَوْدِيand my sidelock لَمْhas not يَشِبْturned gray
وَالمالُand wealth لَمْhas not يَنْفدْrun out وَحُبُّكِand love for you ماhas not سُلِيbeen forgotten
For the dwelling has not grown distant, nor has my sidelock grayed,
And wealth has not run out, nor has love for you been forgotten.
