This is al-ʿAqīq—why does your heart flutter?
Do you think it claps for it in rapture?

The bān trees of Salʿ appeared to it, and it turned,
With a longing within it for their breezes.

Turn us aside from their fragrance, for I
Find the watcher sniffing for their scent.

And on the valley’s right-hand side is a gazelle who never appears
But love for him overwhelms me, and I bow my head.
رَشأٌa fawn نضارةُthe freshness وَجْهِهِof his face لَمْdid not تُبْقِleave ليfor me

A fawn—the freshness of his face has not left me
A breath of life. So, O my gaze, how long will you stare?

Our glances travel toward his cheeks
When the shimmering freshness of his youth shines forth.

إِنِّيindeed I لَيُعْجِبُنِيtruly delights me القضيبُthe bough المورِقُleafy
The green growth of his sideburns has crept across his cheek;
Indeed, the leafy bough delights me.
إِنْif قُلْتُI say أَتْلفَنيhas destroyed me هَواكَlove for you يَقولُhe says ليto me
مَنْwho ذاthis one الَّذيwho أَلجاكcompelled you أَنَّكَthat you تَعْشَقُare in love
If I say, “Love for you has destroyed me,” he says to me,
“Who is it that compelled you to love?”
