مَاnever لامَهُreproached him عَليكُمُover you عَذُولُهُhis reprover
إِلّاexcept وَزادَand increased نَحْوَكُمْtoward you عُدُولُهُhis inclination
His reprover never chided him over you
Without his turning all the more toward you.
مُغْرَىenthralled الفُؤَادِthe heart صَبُّهits lovesick one عانِيcaptive الحَشَاthe breast
أَسيرُهits captive مُضْنَىwasted الهَوىpassion عَلِيلُهُits ailing victim
His heart is enthralled and lovesick, his breast in bondage;
He is its captive, wasted by passion, its ailing victim.
قَدْindeed أَوْقَعَتhave caused to fall عُيونُهhis eyes فُؤادَهُhis heart
فيinto عَثْرةٍa stumble فَمَنْso who لَهُfor him يُقِيلُهُwill lift it up
His eyes have caused his heart
To stumble—who will lift it up for him?
وَافىhe came بِشَوْقٍwith yearning نَحْوَكُمْtoward you مَدِيدُهُits long span
سَرِيعُswift وَجدٍpassion فِيكُمُfor you طَوِيلُهُits long duration
He came with long-drawn yearning toward you,
Swift in passion for you, yet enduring in it.
فَمَاso what الَّذيis it that يُضيرُharms قُدْسَthe sanctity of وَصْلِكُمْunion with you
أَنthat الَّذيthe one who هَامَbecame mad with love بِكُمْfor you خَلِيلُهُits intimate
So what harm is there to the sanctity of union with you,
If he who is mad with love for you is its intimate?
وَاعَجباًO wonder! والقَلْبُwhile the heart يَشْكُوcomplains of وَحْشةًloneliness
إِلَيْكُمto you وَأَنتمُُthough you حُلُولُهُits inhabitants
How strange—the heart complains of loneliness
To you, though you dwell within it!
وَبِيand I am smitten with رَشِيقُslender القَدِّof figure لاnot يَعْطِفُهbends him
تَعَطُّفٌّtenderness نَحويtoward me وَلاnor يُمِيلُهُsways him
And I pine for one of slender form, unbent
By tenderness toward me, nor swayed by it.
لاmay not وَاخَذَhold to account اللَّهُGod بِدَمْعِيfor my tears خَدَّهُhis cheek
فَهُوَfor it is الَّذيthat which أَسالَهُmade it flow أَسيلُهُhis smooth cheek
May God not hold his cheek to account for my tears;
For they are what his smooth cheek made flow.
فَلِلْقَنَاso to the lances وَلِلنَّقاand to the sand dunes قَوامُهُhis form
وَللظُّبىand to the sword edges وَلِلظِّباand to the gazelles كَحيلُهُhis kohl-dark eye
So lances and sand dunes share his form,
And sword edges and gazelles his kohl-dark eye.
عَجِبْتُI marveled مِنْهُat him إذْwhen بَداappeared جَمالُهُhis beauty
لِنَاظريto my eye كَيْفَhow اخْتَفَىlay hidden جَمِيلُهُhis kindness
I marveled at him: when his beauty appeared
Before my eye, how could his kindness stay hidden?
إنْif ناظَرُواthey dispute with نَاظِرَهُhis eye فِيover قَتْلَتِيmy slaying
يَقومُarises مِنْfrom دَلالِهِhis coquetry دَليلُهُits proof
If they dispute with his eye over my slaying,
Its proof will arise from his coquetry.
