يَوْمٌa day تَكَاثَفَgrew dense غَيْمُهُits clouds فَكَأَنَّهُso, as though it were
دُونَbeneath السَّماءِthe sky دُخانُsmoke غَيْمٍa cloud أَخْضَرِgreen
A day whose clouds grew dense, as though they were
beneath the sky, the smoke of a green cloud.
وَالطلُّand the dew مِثْلُlike بُرادَةٍfilings مِنْof فِضَّةٍsilver
مَنْثُورةٍscattered فيin تُرْبَةٍsoil منْof عَنْبَرِambergris
And the dew is like filings of silver
scattered in soil of ambergris.
وَالشَّمْسُand the sun مِنْthrough خَلَلِgaps السَّحابِthe clouds كأنَّهاas though it were
أَمةٌa slave girl تُعرِّضُdisplays نَفْسَهاherself لِلمُشْتَريto the buyer
And the sun, through gaps in the clouds, is like
a slave girl displaying herself to the buyer.
وَلديَّand I have صِرْفُunmixed مُدامةٍwine مَشْمُولةٍchilled by the north wind
تَلْقَىit meets الظَّلامَthe darkness بِوَجْهِwith the face of صُبْحٍa dawn مُسْفِرِradiant
And I have unmixed wine, chilled by the north wind,
that meets the darkness with the face of a radiant dawn.
فَكأنَّهاso it seems that it مِمَّاbecause of how much تُحبُّكَit loves you أَقْسمَتْit has sworn
أَنْthat لاnot تَطِيبَit tastes pleasant لَنَاto us إذاif لَمْnot تَحْضُرِyou are present
So, out of its love for you, it seems to have sworn
not to taste pleasant to us if you are not here.
