The camels of my sleeplessness are fed in part with tears;
A flame my ribs kindled has guided them.
أَبيْتُI refused أَبيتُI spend the night اللَّيْلَthe night إلَّاexcept بِلَوعَةٍwith anguish
أَقَضَّتْgrew harsh بِهَاfor her وَجْداًin longing عَلَيَّfor me المَضاجِعُthe beds
I have refused to spend the night save in anguish;
Through longing for her, my beds have grown harsh beneath me.
كأَنَّas though الدُّجَىnight's darkness يَبْكِيweeps لِحاليَfor my plight رَحْمةًout of pity
فَتِلْكَso those النُّجُومُthe stars الزّاهراتُradiant مَدامِعُtears
It is as though night's darkness weeps in pity for my plight,
And so those radiant stars are tears.
يَاO رَبِّmy Lord هَلْwill ...? طَيْفُdream-phantom الحبيبةِthe beloved زَائِرٌvisiting
وَهَلْand will ...? عَهْدُformer days لَيْلَىLayla بِالأُجَيرِعِat al-Ujayriʿ رَاجِعُreturning
O my Lord, will my beloved's dream-phantom visit?
And will the days with Layla at al-Ujayriʿ return?
وَياand O رَبَّةlady of الخَالِthe beauty mark الخَليَّةِuntroubled مِنْby جَوَىًheartache
مُحِبٍّa lover لَهُfor him دُونَin the way of التَّصبُّرِmustering patience مَانِعُa barrier
And O lady with the beauty mark, untroubled by the heartache
Of a lover whom a barrier keeps from mustering patience:
هَجَرَتْshe deserted فَلَمْso ... did not يَسْتَغْرِقِfully overtake الطَّرْفَthe eye هَجعَةٌslumber
فَنَاظِرُهُso his eye صَادٍthirsty وهجْرُكَand your desertion صَادِعُshattering
She forsook him, and no slumber overtook his eye;
So his eye thirsts, and your desertion shatters him.
وَمَاand what ذنْبُfault مَنْone who لَاnot عِنْدَهُwith him الحُبُّlove ذَائِعٌmade public
وَلاand not السِّرُّthe secret مَبْذُولٌdivulged وَلاand not العَهْدُthe pledge ضَائِعُforsaken
And what fault has one whose love is not made public,
Nor his secret divulged, nor his pledge forsaken?
