كَمْhow many شَمْلُa union صَبْرٍof patience هَجْرُكُمْyour desertion فَرَّقهْhas scattered it
وَنَاظِرٍand an eye بُعْدُكُمُyour distance أَرَّقَهْhas kept it sleepless
How often your desertion has sundered patience's unity,
How much endurance has your estrangement shattered
And how many an eye your distance has kept sleepless!
And how sleepless the watcher for your return
فَكَمْand how often رَنَاgazed طَرْفُthe eye عَليلٍof one lovesick بِكُمْfor you
وَكَمْand how many ترَكْتُمْyou have left مُهْجَةًa heart شَيِّقَهْyearning
And how often has the eye of one lovesick for you gazed!
So many tears has a sick eye shed for you
And how many a heart you have left yearning!
And how many a cloistered one have you left distressed
طَوراًat times تَجُودُونَyou are generous بِوَصْلٍwith reunion أَرَىI see
أَيَّامَهُits days مِنْfrom قُرْبِكُمْyour nearness مُشْرِقَهْradiant
At times you grant reunion; I see
At times you are generous with union—I see
Its days radiant with your nearness.
Its days made radiant by your nearness
وَتَارَةًand at other times تُبْدُونَyou show هَجْراًestrangement فَياthen, oh
وَيْحَalas for حَشىًa heart نحوكُمُtoward you سَيِّقَهْdriven
And at other times you show estrangement—oh,
At others you show aloofness, so alas
Alas for a heart driven toward you!
For the heart tugged tow’rd you without rest
نَشَّفْتُمونيyou have drained me dry فيin هَواكُمْlove for you وَقَدْand indeed
أَخذتُمواyou have taken رأْسيmy head فيin exchange for جَرْدَقَهْa round loaf of bread
You have drained me dry in love for you, and have
You’ve wrung me dry for love of you, and yet
Taken my head for a round loaf of bread.
You’ve captured my head in your noose
