أَنْفَقْتُI spent كَنْزَthe treasure of مَدَائِحيmy praises فيon ثَغْرهِhis lips
أَنْفَقْتُ كَنْزَ مَدَائِحي في ثَغْرهِ
وَجَمَعْتُand I gathered فِيهِin them كُلَّevery مَعنىًthought شاردِelusive
وَجَمَعْتُ فِيهِ كُلَّ مَعنىً شاردِ
I spent the treasure of my praises on his lips,
I spent my treasure of praises on his mouth
And gathered in them every elusive thought.
And gathered in it every fleeting meaning
وَطلبتُand I asked منهُfrom him جَزاءَas recompense for ذَلِكَthat قُبْلةًa kiss
وَطلبتُ منهُ جَزاءَ ذَلِكَ قُبْلةً
فَأَبىbut he refused وَراحَand went تَغَزُّليmy love verse فيin الباردِthe cold (the phrase means “to waste”)
فَأَبى وَراحَ تَغَزُّلي في الباردِ
And asked him for a kiss as recompense for that,
I asked of him the reward for that, a kiss
But he refused, and my love verse went to waste.
But he refused and my lovemaking went for naught
