رَمْنَ بِقَلْبِي لَوَاعِجَ البَلْبَالِ
By eyes that sickened my body and kindled
And eyes that made my body sick and vexed
the searing pangs of anguish in my heart,
My heart with yearning like the nightingales' complaint,

And cheeks like gardens, blossom-filled, well-kept -

Their days of beauty have no taint

I was not among those who wronged them—God knows—
Of fading. I knew nothing of their bowers
yet today I burn in their heat.
Till now, when I am burned in passion's fires.
