أَخْجَلْتَyou put to shame بِالثَّغْرِwith the mouth ثَنَايَاthe front teeth الأَقاحْof the daisies
ياO طُرَّةَforelock اللَّيلِthe night وَوَجْهَand face الصَّباحْthe morning
With your smile you put the daisies’ teeth to shame,
O forelock of night and face of morning!
وَأَعْجَمَتْand struck dumb أَعْيُنَكَyour eyes السِّحْرَmagic مُذْsince
أَعْربَتْspoke plainly مِنْهُنَّfrom them صِفَاحاًsword blades فِصَاحْeloquent
And your eyes have struck magic dumb since
Eloquent blades spoke forth from them.
فَياand oh! لَهَاfor them سُوداًblack مِراضاًlanguid غَدَتْhave begun
تَسُلّunsheathe لِلعاشِقِfor the lover بِيضاًwhite swords صِحَاحْunbroken
And oh, those black, languid eyes, which have begun
To draw white, unbroken swords for the lover!
ياO للْهَوىfor love مَنْwho مُسْعِدٌa comforter مُغْرَماًa lovesick man
رَأَىsaw حَمامَthe doves الأَيْكِof the grove غَنَّىsang فَناحْand so lamented
Alas for love! Who will comfort a lovesick man
Who saw the grove’s doves sing, and then lamented?
ياO بانةًa bān-tree مَالتْswayed بِأعْطافِهِwith his flanks
هاbehold قَدْindeed عَرَفناwe have learned مِنْكِfrom you هَزّthe swaying الرِّماحْof spears
O bān-tree that swayed with his form,
Behold, from you we have learned how spears sway.
وَأَنْتِand you ياO أَسْهُمَarrows أَلحاظِهِof his glances
أَثْخَنْتِyou have grievously wounded وَاللَّهِby God فُؤادِيmy heart جِراحْwith wounds
And you, O arrows of his glances,
By God, you have riddled my heart with wounds!
