Be haughty as you please, for coyness belongs to the beloved,

and humble submission before him to his love-worn lover.

And rule as you please, for you have the greatest right among those who

have possessed the heart, to rule it unjustly or justly.

As for me, even if they reproach me over you and speak at length,

the reproachers surely increase my longings for you.

But I make a show of forgetting, to preserve my dignity

before the reproachers; dignity befits a lover.

    إِنَّ الحبيبَ هُوَ الحبيبُ الأَوّلُ

    And to you I first turned in love;

indeed, the beloved is the first beloved.

O you who carefully shield from others' eyes

a beauty for which every soul is offered,

how long shall I be gentle while harshness overtakes you?

And how long shall I freely offer union while you withhold it?

O mine of hopes, where can a lover

besotted with love for you find a way to turn from your beauty?
