Captive to glances beside a smooth cheek,
Wounded to the core by a languid gaze,
فيin حُبِّlove of مَنْone whom حَظِّيmy fortune مِنْfrom شَعْرِهِhis hair
لَكِنْbut قَصيرٌshort ذَاthis وهَذاand this طَوِيلْlong
In love with one—my fortune is like his hair,
But this is short, and that is long.
لَيْسَis not خَليلاًan intimate friend ليto me وَلَكِنَّهُand yet he
أَضْرَمَkindled فيin الأَحْشاءِthe inward parts نَارَthe fire of الخَلِيلْthe Friend (Abraham)
He is no intimate friend of mine, and yet he
Has kindled the Friend’s fire within my breast.

A gazelle among the Turks, slender-waisted,
Beautiful, he sways his flanks coquettishly.

He has a cheek whose rosy flush bears witness,
If it denies killing me with a kohl-dark gaze.
تَلاعُبُplayful movement الشَّعْرِthe hair علىupon رِدْفِهِhis rump
أَوْقَعَplunged قلبيmy heart فيinto العَرِيضِthe broad الطويلْthe long
The play of his hair upon his rump
Has plunged my heart into troubles broad and long.
كَمْhow often قُلْتُI said مِنْout of وَجْدِيmy longing بِهِfor him مُشْفِقاًin pity
وَليand I have حَشاinward parts مِنْfrom هَجْرِهِhis desertion فيin غليلْburning thirst
How often, out of my longing for him, I have said in pity,
While my heart burns with thirst at his desertion:
ياO ردْفَهُhis rump جُرْتَyou have been unjust علىto خَصْرِهِhis waist
رِفْقاًgentleness بِهِwith it ماnot أَنْتَyou إِلّاexcept ثَقِيلْheavy
O rump of his, you have wronged his waist;
Be gentle with it—you are nothing but heavy!
