When she saw her lovers had encircled her,

drawn by her beauty, with gardens of eyes,

she used the black of their eyes in her hair,

and draped herself in their remaining white.

And return to the beauty of fidelity, for the ugli-

-ness of betrayal is the yearning lover's reason to forget.

And beauty will not keep faith with you

unless you keep faith with lovers.

O you who hasten to forsake him, and place

between the ribs the searing flame of longing:

a heart whose love for you has been pure does not deserve

to be torn apart by estrangement and separation.

Despite this and that, be as you wish; I am the

one trusted to keep the covenant sound.

And at the bitter taste of cruelty's fruit,

the true-hearted lover is worn down by the falsehearted.
