If this unjust treatment and anger from you persist,
then do not ask how my heart blazes.
جَعَلْتَyou have made فَرْطَthe excess of غَرامِيmy passionate love فِيكَfor you ليfor me نَسَباًa bond of kinship
فِيin الهَجْرِestrangement قُلْtell ليme فَدتْكَmay it ransom you النَّفسُthe soul ماwhat السَّبَبُthe reason
You have made my overwhelming love for you my bond of kinship
with estrangement; tell me—may my soul ransom you—what is the reason?
ياO شَعْرَهُhis hair كَمْhow many دُمُوعٌtears فِيكَin you أَنْثُرُهَاI scatter them
وَهَكَذاand likewise اللَّيْلُthe night فيهِin it تَظْهَرُappear الشُّهبُthe shooting stars
O his hair, how many tears I scatter through you!
And likewise, in the night, the shooting stars appear.
تَراهُit sees him عَيْنيmy eye فَتُخْفيهthen conceal him مَدامِعُهاits tears
كَأَنَّهُas though he حِينwhen يَبْدُوappears حِينَwhen يَحْتَجِبُis concealed
My eye sees him, then its tears conceal him,
as though the moment he appears were the moment he is concealed.
وَمَاand not بَداhe appeared قَطُّever يَوْماone day وَهُوَwhile he مُقْتَرِبٌdrawing near

And never once did he appear, drawing near,
without a slanderer and a watcher standing in the way.
ياO ليلُnight مَنْwho لِيfor me بِصُبْحٍwith a dawn بِتُّI spent the night أَرْقبُهُI await it
تَاللَّهِby God قَدْalready فَنِيَتْhave perished مِنْfrom دُونِهshort of it الحِقَبُthe ages
O night, who will bring me a dawn I have spent the night awaiting?
By God, ages have perished before its coming.
إِنَّindeed الَّذينَthose who فُؤاديmy heart فيin الهَوَىlove نَهبُواthey plundered
لِناظِرَيَّto my two eyes سُهَادِيmy sleeplessness فيin الدُّجَىthe darkness وَهَبُواthey bestowed
Indeed, those who plundered my heart in love
have bestowed my sleeplessness in the dark upon my two eyes.
اللَّهGod جَارُهُمtheir protector فيin أَيَّةٍwhichever way سَلَكُواthey traveled
إِنْwhether أَعْتَبُواthey appeased عَاشِقاًa lover فيin الحُبِّlove أَوor عَتَبُواthey reproached
May God be their protector, whichever path they take,
whether they appease a lover in love or reproach him.
