O you who recount the tale—

yet are not quenched by aged wine:

    I have wine; its day

is, to me, like the gardens of bliss.

And indeed I have drunk its froth

in a well-strung necklace of goblets.

    نُخْلي حَشَاكَ مِنَ الهُمُومِ

    So rise and come to me with resolve;

we shall empty your breast of cares.

    The sweetest wine—I have sought

the sweetest companion with whom to drink it.

I grew enamored of longing and passionate love,

and my eye bade farewell to the sweetness of sleep.

And my heart was tormented by one of Shem's offspring—

a gazelle whose gaze is of Ham's line.

He shows me death in a sword and spear

lodged in his sidelong glances and his stature.

I cast my efforts to endure without him behind me,

and set my passion for him before me.

Have I, then, a helper in love who will pity

the pain of sickness I endure?

O you with whom I have occupied my inner thoughts and fancies,

and you for whose abode I journey to Najd and Tihama,

and you whose favor I have known, whose manner is gracious,

and from whom I have gained kindness and bounty:

I have not forgotten your feet, by whose aid hastened and walked

    my own feet, for a time, upon the heights;

nor the beauty of your radiant days, through which grew fair

the nights and days of my life.

What are the schools, that they have muddied a draught

I drew clear from your overflowing sea,

and you have altered a disposition that always favored me

with a laughing, beaming smile from affection's front teeth?

Be however you wish; may all people be your ransom,

for all people are in your lofty shade.

    إِنَّ الجُفُونَ مَظِنَّةُ التُّهَمِ

    Keep your eyelids from shedding my blood;

indeed, eyelids are grounds for suspicion.

And reveal your brow; my paths will become clear.

And draw aside your veil; my darkness will lift.

O garden whose blossoms I gather

with my gaze, not with my hand or my mouth:

why have I been denied the sweetness of union with you in

the days of these sacred months?

If nearness to you could be bought,

I would pay the highest price for it.
