لِيْto me مِنْof هَوَاكَlove of you بَعيدُهُits distant part وَقَريبُهُand its near part
ولَكَand yours الجَمالُbeauty بَديعُهُits wondrous aspect وَغَرِيبُهُand its rare aspect
Of love for you, the distant and the near are mine;
For me, your love has both distant and near
And beauty is yours, both marvelous and rare.
While for you is beauty, both exotic and rare
ياO مَنْyou who أُعِيذُI seek protection for جَمالَهُhis beauty بِجلاَلِهِwith his majesty
حَذَراًout of fear عَلَيْهِfor it مِنَfrom العُيونِeyes تُصِيبُهُstrike it
O you whose beauty I shield with your majesty,
O you whose beauty I protect with his glory
Fearing for it lest eyes should strike it.
Guarding it from eyes that would strike it
إِنْif لَمْnot تَكُنْyou are عَيْنيmy eye فَإِنَّكَthen indeed you are نُورُهَاits light
أَوْor لَمْnot تَكُنْyou are قَلْبيmy heart فأَنْتَthen you are حَبيبُهُits beloved
If you are not my eye, you are its light;
If my eyes are not yours, you're still their light
Or if you are not my heart, you are its beloved.
If my heart's not yours, you're still its delight
هَلْis there حُرْمَةٌregard أَوْor رَحْمَةٌmercy لِمُتيَّمٍfor one enslaved by love
قَدْindeed قَلَّhas grown scant فِيكَin loving you نَصِيرُهُhis helper وَنَصِيبُهُand his share
Is there any regard or mercy for one enslaved by love,
Is there any sanctity or mercy for one spurned in love?
Whose help and fortune in loving you have grown scant?
When in you, both help and luck have lessened
أَلِفَgrew accustomed to القَصائِدَpoems فيin هَوَاكَlove of you تَغزُّلاًsinging of love
حَتَّىuntil كأَنَّas though بِكَabout you النَّسيبَlove poetry نَسِيبُهُhis kinsman
He has taken to poems to sing his love for you,
He composed love poems till it seemed
Until love poetry about you seems his kin.
The composer made you his own kin
هَبْgrant ليto me فُؤَاداًa heart بِالغَرامِwith passion تُشِبُّهُyou kindle it
واسْتَبْقِand spare فَوْداًa temple-lock بالصُّدودthrough rejection تُشِيبُهُyou turn it gray
Grant me a heart for you to kindle with passion,
Grant me a heart that resembles lovesickness
And spare a temple-lock to whiten with your rejection.
And outpace messengers that would make it grey
لَمْnot يَبْقَremains لِيto me سِرٌّa secret أقولُI say تُذِيعُهُyou divulge it
عَنِّيabout me وَلاnor قَلْبٌa heart أَقُولُI say تُذِيبُهُyou melt it
I have no secret left of which to say you divulge it
I have no secret left to tell and spread
About me, nor a heart of which to say you melt it.
Nor a heart left to speak and melt away
كَمْhow many لَيْلَةٍa night قَضَّيْتُهاI spent it مُتَسَهِّداًsleepless
وَالدَّمْعُand tears يَجْرَحُwounds مُقْلَتيmy eye مَسْكُوبُهُits outpouring
How many a night I have spent sleepless,
How many nights I spent awake till dawn
While the outpouring of tears wounds my eye.
Tears wounding my eyelids, poured out
وَالنَّجْمُand the star أَقْرَبُnearer مِنْthan لِقَاكَmeeting you مَنَالُهُreaching it
عِنْدِيto me وَأَبْعَدُand farther مِنْthan رِضَاكَyour favor مَغِيبُهُits setting
And the star is nearer to reach than a meeting with you,
The stars are closer in reaching you
To me, and its setting is farther away than your favor.
To me, while your pleasure is further horizoned
وَالجَوُّand the sky قَدْindeed رَقَّتgrew tender عَليَّtoward me عُيونُهُits eyes
وَجُفونُهُand its eyelids وَشِمالُهُand its north wind وَجنوبُهُand its south wind
And the sky's eyes have grown tender toward me,
The air has softened its eyes over me
And its eyelids, its north wind, and its south wind.
Its eyelids, left and right surrounding me
هِيَit is مُقْلةٌan eye سَهْمُthe arrow الفِراقِof separation يُصِيبُهاstrikes it
وَيَسِحُّand pours forth وَابِلُthe downpour دَمْعِهاof its tears فَيصُوبُهُand so falls upon it
It is an eye struck by separation's arrow,
This is an eyelid struck by separation's arrow
And the downpour of its tears streams forth and falls upon it.
Its torrential tears deluge and soak it
وَجَوىًand anguish تَضرَّمflared up جَمْرُهُits embers لَوْلاbut for نَدَىًdew-like bounty
قَاضِيthe judge القُضاةِof judges قَضَىwould have put an end عَليَّto me لَهِيبُهُits blaze
And anguish whose embers flared—but for the dew of bounty
An ember whose coal would have flared up
Of the chief judge, its blaze would have consumed me.
If not for the justice of Justices that ruled its blaze be upon me
