قَلْبي غَراماً بِما مِنْ فيهِ يُلَحِّنُهْ
And a recitation teacher, sweet in melody, stirred within
A sweet-voiced reciter kindled in my heart
my heart a passion with what he intones from his mouth.
Passion for what he was chanting
يَموتُdies فيin حُبِّهِlove for him تلْميذهُhis pupil كَلَفاًfrom ardent passion
يَموتُ في حُبِّهِ تلْميذهُ كَلَفاً
لأَجْلِbecause of ذاكَthat إذاwhen وَافىhe arrives يُلقِّنُهْhe prompts him
لأَجْلِ ذاكَ إذا وَافى يُلقِّنُهْ
His pupil dies of consuming love for him;
His pupil was dying of love for it
That is why, when he arrives, he prompts him.
Just so he could repeat it when he met him
