Ah, what a welcome visitor your apparition is!
O how I wish for your image drawing near
O fairest of creation in the world!
O most beautiful in the world entire
طَيْفٌan apparition تَجلَّىshone forth نُورهُits light سَاطِعاًradiant
حَتَّىso that even رَأَتْهُsaw it مُقْلةُthe eye of النَّائمِthe sleeper
An apparition whose light shone forth brightly,
An image revealed, its light shining bright
so that even the sleeper's eye beheld it.
To the point even a sleeper's eyes caught sight
ياO غَائِباًabsent one يَحكمُrules فيin مُهْجَتيmy heart
عَليَّfor me طالتْhas grown long غَيْبَةُthe absence of الحَاكمِthe ruler
O absent one who rules within my heart,
O absent one who rules my innermost heart
The ruler's absence has grown long for me.
Prolonged has been your absence, harsh ruler thou art
عارٌa disgrace علىupon حُسْنِكَyour beauty أنْthat أشْتَكيI complain
حَظِّيَmy lot مِنْهُfrom it أنَّهُthat it is ظَالمِيmy oppressor
It is a disgrace to your beauty that I complain
‘Tis shameful that your beauty I bemoan
of my lot at its hands—that it is my oppressor.
My fate with you has left me so alone
