He has been unjust—never will his fairness be seen,
or reunion with him be hoped for after estrangement.
أَهَكَذاis it like this? بِاللَّهِby God أَخْلاقُهُhis ways

Are these, by God, his ways
in love, or did his family teach him so?

O you whose locks mirror the hue of night's darkness,
tell me: what is the cause of your desertion?

You have prolonged your unjust treatment in love; and
death is better than all this estrangement!

Oh, how strange—a reproacher whose unceasing
reproach spurs my heart toward love!

O you who hope I will cease to love,
is this what his reason told him?
