    وَمَا أَنَا فِيما قُلْتُهُ مُتَجَمِّلُ

    Without disparaging the full moon, your face is fairer;

    Nor am I merely being gracious in what I have said.

    لَدَيْكَ بِها كُلُّ امْرِىءٍ يَتَبذَّلُ

    I find no fault in you, except for the guarded reserve

    You possess, which makes every person abase himself;

    And your seclusion: if you could hide even from the veils

    Behind a veil, never appearing to them, you would.

    Your glances are male swords—why, then, do they,

    As people claim, spin like widows?

    And why is the proof of your cheek-down accepted,

    Though it entails circular reasoning and contains an infinite regress?

    And I thought the sun heralded sobriety—

    So why does intoxication from your face come over me?

    It is as though you were created for nothing but eyes

    You keep sleepless with longing, and a heart you soothe.

    مِن الحُسْنِ شَيْئاً عِنْدَ غَيْرِكَ يَجْمُلُ

    I guarantee that your gaze will not find

    Anything that looks beautiful in anyone but you;

    And that lovers' hearts, even if you are cruel

    To them, will not turn to the solace of forgetting.

    My beloved, may beauty rejoice that you have won it,

    And may my heart rejoice that it is your home.

    If you bear sincere affection, then I have not been

    Harmed by the reproachers when they fabricated tales.

    لِذَا حَرَّفوا عَنِّي الحَدِيثَ وَأَوَّلوا

    They saw how abundant was my share of your love;

    So they distorted the talk about me and twisted its meaning.
