شَدَاsang حَالِيmy condition لِيُطْرِبَهُمْto delight them
شَدَا حَالِي لِيُطْرِبَهُمْ
بِلَفْظٍwith words لِلْهَوَىfor love يُعْربْgives voice
بِلَفْظٍ لِلْهَوَى يُعْربْ
My condition sang to delight them,
He feigned joy to please them
With words that give voice to love.
With words of passion he expressed
فَقَالَthen said لِسَانُthe tongue of حَالهُمُtheir condition
فَقَالَ لِسَانُ حَالهُمُ
مُغَنِّيthe singer of الحَيِّthe neighborhood مَاdoes not يُطْرِبْdelight
مُغَنِّي الحَيِّ مَا يُطْرِبْ
Then the tongue of their condition said:
But his heart's tongue spoke for them
“The neighborhood’s singer does not delight.”
Singers gladden not the living breast
