بَهَرَdazzled الأَبْصَارَthe eyes مُذْsince ظَهَراhe appeared
A moon that dispels the darkness before dawn,
A moon shining through the gloom of nightfall
He has dazzled eyes ever since he appeared.
Dazzling all eyes since it appeared
آمِنٌfree مِنْfrom شُبْهَةِa hint of الكَلَفِdark spots
ذُبتُI melted فِيin حِبَّيْهِhis two beloveds بِالكَلَفِwith infatuation
Free from any hint of dark spots,
Safe from any hint of slander
I melted with passion for his two beloveds.
I melted in love for him despite the slander
لَمْnot يَزَلْhe ceases يَسْعَىhe strives إلىtoward تَلَفِيmy ruin
برِكَابِon the mounts of الدّلِّcoquetry وَالصّلْفِand arrogance
He keeps striving toward my ruin,
He kept striving to reach me
Astride the mounts of coquetry and arrogance.
At the feet of the buckets and water wheels
آهah! لَوْلاwere it not for أَعْيُنُthe eyes of الحَرَسِthe guards
نِلْتُI attained مِنْهُfrom him الوَصْلَunion مُقْتَدِرَاfully capable
Ah, were it not for the guards' eyes,
Oh if not for the guards' eyes
I would have won union with him, in full command.
I'd have attained union with him in power
يَاO أَمِيراًprince جَارَacted unjustly مُذْsince وَلِياhe took power

O prince, unjust ever since he took power,
O prince, my neighbor since you assumed power
How can you not pity one afflicted?
How can you not mourn for one so afflicted as I?
فَبِثغرٍso, by a mouth مِنْكَof yours لِيto me جُلِياwas revealed
قَدْindeed حَلاwas sweet طَعْماًin taste وَقَدْand indeed حَلِياwas lovely
So by your mouth, revealed to me,
Console me with a smile from you
Sweet to taste and lovely to behold,
That has ripened in flavor and beauty
وَبِمَاand by what أُوتِيتَyou were granted مِنْof كَيَسٍdiscernment

جُدْbe generous فَمَاfor ... not أَبْقَيْتَyou have left مُصْطَبِراanyone able to endure
And by the discernment you have been granted,
With what you've been granted of generosity
Be generous, for you have left no one able to endure.
Be generous, for you've not much longer remained

You have a cheek, Abu al-Faraj
Adorned with rose-red color and crimson,
Adorned with blushing and down
وَحَدِيثٍand speech عَاطِرِfragrant in الأَرَجِscent

And speech of fragrant scent—
And sweet aromatic conversation
How often it has captured my heart without scruple!
That has captivated my heart without reserve
لَوْif رَآكَsaw you الغُصْنُthe bough لَمْnot يَمِسِsway
أَوْor رَآكَsaw you البَدْرُthe full moon لاسْتَتَراit would have hidden itself
Had the bough seen you, it would not have swayed,
If the branch saw you it wouldn't touch
Or had the full moon seen you, it would have hidden itself.
Or the moon saw you it would hide
بَدْرُa full moon تَمٍّfullness فيin الجَمَالِbeauty سَنِيradiant

A full moon, radiant in beauty,
A full moon in beauty and charm
And so they nicknamed him Sani.
And so they titled him "The Charming One"

With a dazzling, lovely face,
With a radiant, beautiful smile
He has robbed me of the pleasure of slumber.
That has captivated me with pleasure and joy

He is my fawn, yet he preys upon me;
He is my conqueror and despoiler
So relate a tale of my marvel.
So narrate to me the tale of my wonder

You have far surpassed the full moons in beauty,
You have excelled in dazzling beauty
O you who melt my lifeblood with grief,
O melter of my being into liquid!
هَلْwill ... ? تُرِينيyou show me لِلْجَفَاto estrangement أَمَدَاan end

Will you show me an end to estrangement?
Will you show me more disregard?
How strange that you cure sore eyes,
Strange that you would cure blindness!
وَبِسُقْمِand with the sickness of النّاظِرِينَthe beholders كُسِيwas clothed
جَفْنُكَyour eyelid السَّحَّارُbewitching فَانْكَسَرَاand so it drooped
Yet in the beholders' sickness was clothed
And with the sickness of onlookers be veiled
Your bewitching eyelid, and so it drooped.
So your bewitching eyelid broke and turned away
