خَياليّmy phantom أَخَافُI fear الهَجْرَabandonment مِنْهُfrom him
وَلَسْتُand I am not أَرَاهُI see him يَرْغَبُdesires فيin وِصَاليunion with me
I fear my phantom will forsake me;
My imagination, I fear separation from it
And I do not see him longing for union with me.
Yet I don't see it desiring my company
وَكُنْتَand you had عَهِدْتَنِيyou knew me قِدماًformerly شُجاعاًbrave
فَماso what لِيwith me اليَوْمَtoday أَفْزَعُI take fright مِنْat خَيَالِيmy shadow
And you once knew me to be brave—
You used to know me as a courageous man
So why today do I take fright at my own shadow?
So why today am I startled by my imagination
