سُلُوِّيmy forgetting عَنْaway from هَواكُمْlove for you لاnot يَجُوزُis permissible
وَبَعْضُand a portion of هَواكُمُlove for you كُلّيall of me يَحُوزُpossesses
I may not cease to love you;
Ask me not to change my love, for some loves fully capture the heart
And a fraction of love for you possesses all of me.
Yet chastisements for loving you should not against me be thought
وَلَوْمُand the reproach of عَوَاذليmy reproachers فيin الحُبِّlove فِيكُمْfor you
وَحَقِّكُمُby your honor بِأذْنيthrough my ear لاnot يَجُوزُpasses
And my reproachers’ blame for my love of you—
I have a fawn whose beauty my heart holds most dear
By your honor, it does not pass through my ear.
His love that my heart cherishes, ever precious
وَليand I have ظَبْيٌa gazelle غَريرٌguileless فيin حِمَاكُمْyour sanctuary
لَهُhe has حُسْنٌbeauty علىto قَلْبيmy heart عَزيزُdear
And I have a guileless gazelle in your sanctuary;
So my love for him though dead hopes to be resurrected
His beauty is dear to my heart.
If no perverseness from people should come to be
فَميِّتُso one slain by حُبِّهِlove of him يَرْجُوhopes for نُشُوراًresurrection
إِذَاif لَمْdoes not يَأْتِcome مِنْfrom خَلْقٍany creature نُشُوزُestrangement
So one slain by love of him hopes for resurrection,
For every love of humankind is but borrowed
If no estrangement comes from any creature.
Yet my love for you within me is true and uncoerced
وكُلُّand all هَوَىlove البَراياof humankind مُسْتَعارٌborrowed
وَلَكِنْand yet حُبُّكُمْlove for you عِنْدِيin me غَرِيزُinnate
And all humankind’s love is borrowed,
But love for you is innate in me.
