تَوَلَّتdeparted رِجاليmy men بِالغَنائِمِwith the spoils وَالغِنىand wealth
مُزَجّينَdriving onward لِلأَجمالِthe camels مِنfrom رَمَلانِRamalan
My men departed with spoils and wealth,
My men turned with spoils and riches
driving the camels onward from Ramalan.
Urging their camels over the sands
وَنادواand they called نِداءًa call بِالرَحيلِfor departure فَلَمbut not أُطِقI could bear
إِياباًa return وَصِنويwhile my brother فيin المَعارِكِthe battles فانِdead
And they called out for departure, but I could not bear
They called to depart but I could not bear
to return while my brother lay dead on the battlefields.
To return defeated from battle
أَؤوبُshall I return إِلىto أُمّيmy mother سَليماًunharmed مُكَرَّماًhonored
وَغَرسانُwhile Gharsan مَقتولٌslain بِدارِin an abode of هَوانِdisgrace
Shall I return to my mother unharmed and honored,
Shall I go back to my mother unharmed and honored
while Gharsan lies slain in an abode of disgrace?
When Gharasan lies slain in the abode of disgrace?
أَأَترُكُshall I abandon مَنone who لاnot يَترُكُforsakes الدَهرever طاعَتيobedience to me
مُلَبٍّanswering the call لَماto whatever أَدعوI call for بِكُلِّin every لِسانِtongue
Shall I abandon one who never ceases to obey me,
Shall I abandon one who never disobeyed me
answering whatever I call for, in every tongue—
However I summoned with every tongue?
أَخيmy brother وَمُعينيand my helper فيin الخُطوبِcalamities وَصاحِبيand my companion
بِكُلِّin all إِغاراتيmy raids بِحَدِّwith the sharp edge of سَنانِa spearhead
my brother, my helper in calamities, and my companion
My brother, my ally in tribulations, my companion
in all my raids, with a spearhead's sharp edge?
In all my raids with the edge of my blade
فَلَمّاso when دَعانيhe called me ياO اِبنَson of رَوحانَRawhan لَمdid not أَخِمI flinch
وَقَوَّمتُand I set straight عَسّاليmy quivering spear وَصَدرَand the breast of حِصانيmy stallion
So when he called me, 'O son of Rawhan,' I did not flinch,
When he called "O Ibn Rawahana" I did not waver
and I set my quivering spear and my stallion's breast straight ahead.
I spurred my stallion and charged forth
طَعَنتُI pierced بِنَصلِwith the blade of الرُمحِthe spear جَبهَةَthe forehead of مالِكٍMalik
وَغَيَّبتُهُand I buried it فيهِin him بِغَيرِwithout تَوانِdelay
I pierced Malik's forehead with the spear's blade,
I stabbed through the brow of Malik with my spear
and buried it in him without delay.
And plunged him into darkness without delay
وَجَندَلتُand I felled عَمّاراًAmmar بِضَربَةِwith a stroke of صارِمٍa keen sword
وَمَزَّقتُand I tore apart شَملَthe unity of الجُندِthe army بِالخَولانِwith al-Khawlan
And I felled Ammar with a stroke of a keen sword,
And I felled Ammar with a blow of my sword
and tore the army's ranks apart with al-Khawlan.
Shattering the enemy ranks in turmoil
