أَمِنis it from دونِbefore reaching لَيلىLayla عَوَّقَتناheld us back العَوائِقُthe obstacles
جُنودٌarmies وَقَفرٌand a wilderness تَرتَعيهِgraze in it النَقانِقُthe male ostriches
Have obstacles held us back from Layla—
Beyond Layla hindrances impeded our way,
Armies, and a wilderness where male ostriches graze,
Soldiers and a barren land where foxes stray.
وَعجمٌand non-Arabs وَأَعرابٌand Bedouin Arabs وَأَرضٌand a land سَحيقَةٌfar-off
وَحِصنٌand a fortress وَدورٌand dwellings دونَهاbefore reaching her وَمَغالِقُand locks
And non-Arabs, and Bedouins, and a far-off land,
Non-Arabs and Bedouins, a vast expanse of land,
And a fortress, dwellings between us and her, and locks?
A fortress, abodes - all barring our hand.
وَغَرَّبَهاand sent her far away عَنّيfrom me لَكيزٌLakiz بِجَهلِهِthrough his ignorance
وَلَمّاand not yet يَعُقهُhindered him عِندَat ذَلِكَthat عائِقُan obstacle
And Lakiz, in his ignorance, sent her far away from me,
An ignorant man estranged her from me,
And no obstacle had yet hindered him then.
When advice could not deter his tyranny.
وَقَلَّدَنيand burdened me ماwhat لاnot أُطيقُI can bear إِذاif وَنَتgrew weary
بَنوthe sons of مُضَرَMudar الحُمرُthe ruddy ones الكِرامُthe noble ones الشَقائِقُthe full brothers
And he burdened me with what I cannot bear, if they falter—
He burdened me with more than I could endure,
The ruddy, noble sons of Mudar, brothers of one blood.
The noble, red-cheeked clan of Mudar once pure.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَرجوهُمsurely place hope in them وَلَستُand I am not بِآئِسٍin despair
وَإِنّيand indeed I بِهِمin them ياO قَومُpeople لاno شَكَّdoubt واثِقُconfident
And indeed I place my hope in them, and I do not despair;
Yet I still hope in them - I'm not in despair,
And indeed I trust them, O people, without a doubt.
My people, in them, truly, I fully trust.
فَمَنso who مُبلِغٌa messenger to بُردَBurd الإِياديal-Iyadi وَقَومَهُand his people
بِأَنّيthat I بِثاريin pursuit of my vengeance لاno مَحالَةَescape لاحِقُattaining
So who will tell Burd al-Iyadi and his people
Who will tell the children of my tribe anew
That I shall have my vengeance, without fail?
That I, without doubt, will avenge what is due?
سَتُسعِدُنيwill aid me بيضُthe gleaming ones الصَوارِمِthe keen-edged swords وَالقَناand spears

Gleaming, keen-edged swords and spears will aid me,
White swords and spears will bring me joy again
And lean-bellied, noble-bred, fleet horses will carry me.
As honour's mantle settles on me then.
رَمىmay ... strike اللَهُGod مَنwhoever يَرميaccuses الكَعابَthe nubile maiden بِريبَةٍwith suspicion
وَمَنand whoever هُوَhe بِالفَحشاءِwith obscenity وَالمَكرِand deceit ناطِقُspeaking
May God strike whoever casts suspicion on the maiden,
May God curse those who with suspicion view
And whoever utters obscenity and deceit.
And those whose tongues with vice and mischief spew.
