and fierce warriors from among Jusham, whom you see
on the morning of terror like ravening lions,
وَقَومَand the people of بَنيthe sons of رَبيعَةَRabi'a آلَthe kin of قَوميmy people
تَهَيّأواthey made ready لِلتَحِيَّةِfor the greeting وَالمَزارِand the visit
and the folk of Banu Rabi'a, my own kindred.
They readied themselves for greeting and a visit
إِلىto أَخوالِهِمtheir maternal uncles طَيٍّTayy فَأَهدَواthen they offered as gifts
لَهُمto them طَعناًspear-thrusts مِنَof العُنوانِthe token واريlung-piercing
to their maternal uncles, Tayy, and offered
them, as a token, lung-piercing thrusts.
صَبَحناهُمwe attacked them at dawn عَلىon جُردٍsleek-coated horses عِتاقٍhighbred
بِأَسيافٍwith swords مُهَنَّدَةٍof Indian steel قَواريcleaving
We attacked them at dawn on sleek, highbred steeds,
with cleaving swords of Indian steel.
وَلَولاand were it not for صائِحاتٌshrieking women اَسعَفَتهُمwho aided them
جَهاراًopenly بِالصُراخِwith cries المُستَجارِappealing for protection
And had not shrieking women come to their aid,
openly, with cries appealing for protection,
لَمّاwould not have رَجَعواthey returned وَلاnor عَطَفواthey wheeled back عَلَيناagainst us
وَخافواand they feared ضَربَthe blows of باتِرَةِsevering الشِفارِthe blade-edges
they would neither have returned nor wheeled against us;
and they feared the blows of keen-edged blades.
فَياthen oh! لَكَfor you مِنof صُراخٍshrieking وَاِفتَضاحٍand disgrace
وَنَقعٍand dust ثائِرٍrising وَسطَamid الدِيارِthe dwellings
Then, oh, what shrieking and disgrace,
and dust rising amid the dwellings!
عَلىon قُبٍّlean-bellied horses مُسَوَّمَةٍmarked عِتاقٍhighbred
مُقَلَّدَةٍcollared with أَعِنَّتَهاtheir reins كِبارِlarge
On lean-flanked, marked, highbred steeds,
great horses with their reins hung about their necks,
فَتَعطِفُthen they wheel بِالقَناwith lances فيin كُلِّevery صُبحٍmorning
وَتَحمِلُand they charge فيin العَجاجَةِthe dust-cloud وَالغُبارِand dust
they wheel with lances every morning,
and charge amid dust-clouds and flying dust.
وَقَدand indeed زُرناwe visited الضُحاةَat midmorning بَنيthe sons of لُهَيمٍLuhaym
فَأَحدَرناهُمُthen we cast them down فيinto كُلِّevery عارِdisgrace
And at midmorning we visited Banu Luhaym,
then plunged them into every kind of disgrace.
فَيَمَّمتُthen I aimed السَنانَthe spearhead لِصَدرِat the breast of عَمرٍو'Amr
فَطاحَthen he fell مُجَندَلاًfelled to the ground فيin الصَفِّthe battle-line عاريnaked
Then I aimed the spearhead at 'Amr's breast,
and he fell prostrate in the ranks, naked.
وَقَدand indeed جادَتwere generous يَدايَmy two hands عَلىto خَميسٍan army
بِضَربَةِwith a blow of باتِرِa severing sword الحَدَّينِboth edges فاريcleaving
And my hands were generous to an army,
with a blow from a cleaving sword, keen on both edges.
وَأَفلَتand he escaped فارِسُthe horseman of الجُرّاحِal-Jarrah مِنّيfrom me
لَضَربَةِat a blow of مُنصُلٍa sword-blade فَوقَabove السُواريthe armlet
And al-Jarrah's horseman escaped me
at a sword-blade's stroke above the armlet.
فَقُلso say لِاِبنِto the son of الذُعَيرِal-Dhu'ayr النَذلِthe baseborn هَلّاwhy not
تَصَبَّرُyou endure الوَغىbattle مِثلَlike اِصطِباريmy endurance
So tell the baseborn son of al-Dhu'ayr: Why not
stand firm in battle as I do?
أَلَمdid I not أَدعوهُcall him فيin سَبقٍa contest فَوَلّىthen he turned away
كَمِثلِjust like الكَبشِthe ram يَأذَنُtakes heed بِالحِذارِof the warning
Did I not challenge him in a contest, and he turned away,
like a ram that heeds a warning?

I am a son of the proud, of Nizar, my forebear,
noble in honor, of well-known lineage.
