I wept for Gharsan, and my eye had every right

To mourn the man slain by the Persians when he was far away.

I wept for the kindler of sparks, the youth of battle,

Swift to the fray whenever he charged,

When he mounted a sturdy steed and leveled a slender lance,

And drove a Bakrite headlong and brandished a Yemeni sword.

Then he lay treacherously slain in a vile land,

There, a youth like a sword, who had outstripped his rivals.

And now al-Barraq dwells in a land of exile,

And has parted from his brethren and his allies.

Bound to separation, hollow-bellied, shedding blood,

He weeps anew, his tears stirring the mourning women.

Who, then, will carry word from me to Karima, his mother,

So she may mourn Gharsan, and then Barraq?
