بانَhas departed الشَبابُyouth وَكُلُّand every شَيءٍthing بائِنُdeparting
وَالمَرءُand man مُرتَهَنٌheld hostage بِماto what هُوَit كائِنُis to come
Youth has departed, and all things depart.
Youth has departed and all things fade away,
And man is held hostage to what is to come.
And man is pledged to that which is destined.
ظَعَنَتjourneyed away بِهِwith him أَيّامُهُhis days وَشُهورُهُand his months
إِنَّindeed المُقيمَone who abides عَلىamid الحَوادِثِvicissitudes ظاعِنُdeparting
His days and months have carried him away.
His days and months have sneered at him,
Indeed, whoever abides amid vicissitudes is bound to depart.
Truly, he who remains steadfast through adversities is wretched.
ذَهَبَhas gone الشَبابُyouth وَغاضَand ebbed ماءُwater بِرَندِهِits damascened lustre
فَاليَومَso today مِنهُfrom it كُلُّevery وِردٍdraught آجِنُstale
Youth has gone, and the water of its lustre has ebbed.
Youth has departed and the water of his stream is diminishing,
So today every draught from it is stale.
Now from it every freshet is turbid.
دَرَسَتhave faded مَحاسِنُهُits beauties وَطارَand flew away غُرابُهُits raven (black hair)
وَلَقَدand surely تَكونُwould be لَهُbelonging to it عَلَيكَtoward you مَحاسِنُkindnesses
Its beauties have faded, and its raven has flown.
Its attributes have passed away and its ravens have flown,
And surely it once had kindnesses for you,
Yet attributes may still remain for you.
أَيّامَin the days when طَرفُكَyour gaze لِلجَآذِرِfor the oryx calves كامِنٌlying in wait
وَالمَوتُand death فيin حَدَقِpupils الجَآذِرِthe oryx calves كامِنُlurking
In the days when your gaze lay in wait for the oryx calves,
The days of your prime are devoted to the grave,
And death lurked in the oryx calves' pupils.
And death in the sight of the grave is lurking.
خانَbetrayed الزَمانُTime أَخاكَyour brother فيin لَذّاتِهِhis pleasures
إِنَّindeed الزَمانَTime لِكُلِّto every حُرٍّnoble man خائِنُtreacherous
Time has betrayed your brother in his pleasures.
Time has betrayed your brother in his pleasures,
Indeed, Time is treacherous to every noble man.
Verily time for every free man is a traitor.
