غِناؤُكَyour singing لَيسَdoes not يُغنيbenefit سامِعيهِits listeners
وَضَربُكَand your playing يوجِبُwarrants الضَربَthe beating الوَجيعاpainful
Your singing does its listeners no good.
Your singing does not delight your listeners,
And your playing warrants a painful beating.
And your beating causes painful blows.
وَوَجهُكَand your face يَطرُدُdrives away النَشَواتِthe bursts of exhilaration عَنّاfrom us
وَقُربُكَand your nearness يُذكِرُbrings to mind المَوتَdeath السَريعاswift
And your face drives our raptures away.
Your face drives away our joy,
And your nearness brings swift death to mind.
And your nearness reminds us of imminent death.
إِذاwhen غَنَّيتَناyou sing to us يَومَa day of اِصطِباحٍmorning drinking
فَقَدthen indeed أَوسَعتَناyou have given us plenty of عَطَشاًthirst وَجوعاand hunger
When you sing to us on a day of morning drinking,
When you sing to us one morning,
Then you have given us our fill of thirst and hunger.
You have intensified our thirst and hunger.
