وَلِيُّكُمُyour guardian اللَهُGod الَّذيwho لَمnot يَزَلcease لَناfor us
وَلِيُّكُمُ اللَهُ الَّذي لَم يَزَل لَنا
وَلِيٌّa guardian دُروءٍwarding off harm عَنكُمُfrom you وَدِفاعِand defense
وَلِيٌّ دُروءٍ عَنكُمُ وَدِفاعِ
Your guardian is God, who has always been for us
Your protector is Allah, who has always been
A guardian, warding harm from you and defending you.

لَقَدindeed سَرَّنيgladdened me أَنَّthat العَواقِبَthe outcomes رَوَّعَتterrified
لَقَد سَرَّني أَنَّ العَواقِبَ رَوَّعَت
عِداكُمyour enemies بِرَأسَيwith the two heads of تامِشٍTamish وَشُجاعِand Shujaʿ
عِداكُم بِرَأسَي تامِشٍ وَشُجاعِ
It has indeed gladdened me that the outcomes terrified
I was gladdened that consequences horrified
Your enemies with the two heads of Tamish and Shujaʿ.
Your enemies with courageous resolve and brave audacity
وَكاناand they both were خَبيثَيboth wicked in ظاهِرٍoutward conduct وَسَريرَةٍand inward intent
وَكانا خَبيثَي ظاهِرٍ وَسَريرَةٍ
لَكُمtoward you وَقَبيهَيand both repulsive in رُؤيَةٍseeing وَسَماعِand hearing
لَكُم وَقَبيهَي رُؤيَةٍ وَسَماعِ
And both were vile in outward conduct and inward intent
Those two were wicked, outwardly and secretly
Toward you, and repulsive to see and hear.
Hostile and deaf to your views and listening
أَقاماthey both remained قَرينَيtwo companions of غَيَّةٍwaywardness وَضَلالَةٍand error
أَقاما قَرينَي غَيَّةٍ وَضَلالَةٍ
وَباتاand they both became قَتيلَيtwo slain victims of غِرَّةٍheedlessness وَضَياعِand ruin
وَباتا قَتيلَي غِرَّةٍ وَضَياعِ
They remained companions of waywardness and error,
They established corruption and misguidance as companions
And both lay slain through heedlessness and ruin.
And perished as duped wanderers in confusion and loss
وَقَدand indeed أُمِراthey both were instructed بِالرُشدِtoward right guidance حيناًfor a time فَعاصَياbut they both disobeyed
وَقَد أُمِرا بِالرُشدِ حيناً فَعاصَيا
وَكَمand many a آمِرٍone enjoining بِالرُشدِtoward right guidance غَيرِnot مُطاعِobeyed
وَكَم آمِرٍ بِالرُشدِ غَيرِ مُطاعِ
And they had been urged toward right guidance for a time, but both disobeyed;
Though at times commanded to be righteous, they disobeyed
And many who urge right guidance go unheeded.
And how many righteous commanders go disobeyed!
فَقُلso tell لِلإِمامِto the imam المُستَعينِal-Mustaʿin الَّذيwho لَهُto him belongs
فَقُل لِلإِمامِ المُستَعينِ الَّذي لَهُ
تُراثُlegacy قُصيٍّQusayy مِنof عُلاًhigh honor وَمَساعِand endeavors
تُراثُ قُصيٍّ مِن عُلاً وَمَساعِ
So tell the imam al-Mustaʿin, to whom belongs
Tell the Imam al-Mu'tasim, whose inheritance
Qusayy's legacy of high honor and endeavors:
Is the legacy of Qusayy in glory and range
أَقِمset aright بِاِبنِthrough the son of يَزدادَYazdad الأُمورَthe affairs فَإِنَّهُfor indeed he
أَقِم بِاِبنِ يَزدادَ الأُمورَ فَإِنَّهُ
لَهاfor them خَيرَthe best والٍgovernor تَصطَفيهِyou select him وَراعِand shepherd
لَها خَيرَ والٍ تَصطَفيهِ وَراعِ
Set affairs aright through Ibn Yazdad, for he is
Support Ibn Yazdad, so affairs improve, for he
The best governor and shepherd you could choose for them:
Is a caretaker who excellently shepherds and attends
أَمانَةُtrustworthiness صَدرٍbreast وَاِضطِلاعُand shouldering كِفايَةٍcompetence
أَمانَةُ صَدرٍ وَاِضطِلاعُ كِفايَةٍ
وَصِحَّةُand soundness عَزمٍresolve وَاِتِّساعُand breadth ذِراعِarm
وَصِحَّةُ عَزمٍ وَاِتِّساعُ ذِراعِ
Integrity of heart, and competence in shouldering duties,
Trustworthiness of chest, shouldering competence
And soundness of resolve, and breadth of arm.
Strength of resolve, and breadth of capability
أَلانَnow اِبتَعَثتَyou have summoned الرَأيَcounsel غَيرَnot مُثَبَّجٍmuddled
أَلانَ اِبتَعَثتَ الرَأيَ غَيرَ مُثَبَّجٍ
بِهِwith it وَاِقتَبَلتَand you have welcomed الرُشدَright guidance غَيرَnot مُضاعِwasted
بِهِ وَاِقتَبَلتَ الرُشدَ غَيرَ مُضاعِ
Now you have summoned counsel without making a muddle
You have revived sound judgment, not compromised
Of it, and welcomed right guidance without wasting it.
And have embraced righteousness, not neglected
