أَطنَبتِyou have gone on at length فيin اللَومِblame فَلاso do not تُكثِريgo on excessively
مَنwho مُنصِفيone who does me justice مِنكُمamong you وَمَنand who مُعذِريone who excuses me
You have dwelt long on blame—do not go on.
You have excessively blamed me, so do not persist
Who among you will do me justice, and who will excuse me?
Who is fair to me among you all and who excuses me?
ياO أَيُّهاyou العُذّالُreproachers ماwhat حَلَّhas befallen بيme
مِنfrom نُصحِكُمyour counsel ياO رَبِّmy Lord ليfor me فَاُنصُرِso grant help
O you reproachers, what I have suffered
O blamer, what has befallen me
from your counsel! O Lord, come to my aid.
From your advice, oh Lord, give me victory
أَكثَرتِyou have multiplied لَوميblame of me وَتَناوَلتِنيand assailed me
تَبغينَyou seek أَنthat أَتلَفَI perish فَاِستَغفِريso seek forgiveness
You have heaped blame on me and assailed me;
You have increased blaming me and assaulted me
you seek my ruin—so seek forgiveness.
You want me to perish, so seek forgiveness
ماwhat جُرمُthe crime مَنof one who هامَbecame madly infatuated بِذيwith one possessed of لَوعَةٍburning longing
شَبيهَةٌlike شَمسُthe sun الضُحىthe forenoon الأَكبَرِthe greatest
What crime has one committed, madly in love with one full of burning longing,
What is the crime of one who is infatuated
like the sun at the height of morning?
With one having great torment
كَأَنَّماas though صورَتُهاher form فيin الدُجىthe darkness
قِنديلُa lamp قِسّيسٍof a priest عَلىupon مِنبَرِa pulpit
As though her form in the darkness
She is like the sun of brilliant morning
were a priest’s lamp upon a pulpit.
A priest's lantern on the pulpit
وَالريقُand the saliva مِنهاfrom her إِنif تَجَرَّعتُهُI sip it
خِلتُI imagined نَسيمَa breeze المِسكَةِthe musk الأَزفَرِstrong-scented
And her saliva, if I sip it,
And her saliva, if I taste it
I would think it a breath of strong-scented musk.
I feel the breeze of sweetest basil
وَالوَجهُand the face مِنهاof her حينَwhen أَبصَرتُهُI beheld it
يَكِلُّfalls short عَنهُof it الوَصفُdescription فَاِستَبصِرِso see for yourself
And her face, when I beheld it—
And her face when I saw it
description falls short of it, so see for yourself.
Description falls short of it, so see clearly
وَلاand do not تُعيديrepeat أَبَداًever لَومَblame of مَنone who
فيin قَلبِهِhis heart كَالحَظِرِlike the brushwood الأَخضَرِgreen
And never again blame one
And never repeat the blame of one
whose heart holds something like green brushwood.
Who has a heart like a green barrier
