فَتُهيبَso you call out مِنfrom شَوقٍlonging إِلَيكَfor you دِراكاcome quickly!
Will you listen to the one who called you,
Are you listening to one who called out to you
Crying, from longing for you, 'Come quickly!'?
Yearning passionately to reach you?
ياO يوسِفَYusuf بنَson of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad دَعوىthe appeal of اِمرِئٍa man

O Yusuf, son of Muhammad, this is the appeal of a man
O Yusuf son of Muhammad, the plea of a man
Whose tongue longing swayed, so he called you.
Whose passion moved his tongue to call you
لاdo not يَعدَمُlack العافونَseekers of bounty حَيثُwherever تَوَجَّهواthey turn
يَدَكَyour hand الهَتونَever-pouring وَوَجهَكَand your face الضَحّاكاever-smiling
Seekers of bounty, wherever they turn, never lack
The righteous are never devoid of well-being wherever they go
Your ever-pouring hand and your ever-smiling face.
Your hand provides aid and your face brings joy
مازِلتَyou kept on مُذsince جارَيتَyou raced سابِقَthe foremost of مَعشَرٍa company

You kept on, since you raced the foremost of a company
Since competing with the foremost, you have always
Who sought the heights, until you caught up with your father.
Striving for greatness until you reached your father
فَجَرىso he ran عَلىat غَلوائِهِhis headlong pace وَعَلِقتَهُand you clung to him

بِالجَريِin running لاneither فَوتاًbeing left behind وَلاnor إِدراكاcatching up
Then he ran at his headlong pace, and you stayed on his heels,
So you followed his excess and clinging
Running, neither left behind nor catching up.
By striving, neither falling behind nor giving up
صَرَفوكَthey kept you away عَنfrom حَربِwarfare الثُغورِthe frontiers بِقَدرِin proportion to ماhow

They kept you from the frontier wars to the extent
They kept you from the frontier wars as far as
That they judged you, son of Muhammad, by someone else.
They knew you, O son of Muhammad, to be unique

His feet slipped beneath him in a perilous place,
Your feet trod dangerous precipices
Where your feet stood firm through guidance.
Guided by piety, your feet treaded securely
فَوَراءَكَso behind you الإِسلامُIslam مَحروسَsafeguarded in القُوىits strength

لَمّاwhen جَعَلتَyou placed أَمامَكَbefore you الإِشراكاpolytheism
So behind you stands Islam, its strength safeguarded,
Behind you, Islam’s might is protected
When you placed polytheism before you.
When you make unbelief your foremost adversary

And the Byzantines know that your sword has always been
And Rome knows your sword has never ceased
Death and destruction to their proud kings.
To be the death and destruction of its kings

And were you to embrace them with your might, they would meet—
Had you embraced them in your hands, they would have met
Your two hands, beyond the waves of the gulf.
From beyond the waves of the Gulf, your hands

The envious will not seize your glory by wishing:
The envious will never seize your glory by wishes
God gave you what He gave you.
God granted you what He granted you

The Source of Peace bestowed peace on you, and a blessing
Peace sends its greeting and grace to you
That brings burning resentment into your enemies' breasts.
Bestowing tranquility into the hearts of your friends

And the cloud drove its riding-camels toward the frontiers with song,
And the clouds strode to the frontiers on their mounts
Until it made them kneel on their heights and gave you drink.
Until pitching their height, they quenched your thirst

A land that boasts over the clouds whenever
A land that wanders into the clouds when
Sayhan and your bounty meet within its bounds.
Your outcries meet in its chambers and calls
لَمdid not تُروِquench دِجلَةُthe Tigris ظَمأَةًa thirst مِنّيof mine وَقَدthough already

The Tigris did not quench a thirst of mine, though
The Tigris did not see a thirst from me though
I had dwelt beside it, and left that for the other.
I dwelt by it, leaving that for that
فَمَتىso when أَرومُshall I seek الغَربَthe west نَحوَكَtoward you ماتِحاًdrawing up

So when shall I seek the west, toward you, drawing up
So when will I head west toward you, yearning
The bucket of bounty, to see wealth—and see you?
To the west of dew, to see abundance and you?

Do not ask me about my thwarted quest
Do not ask me about the frustration of my quest
And the eclipse of my hopes—may I be your ransom!
And the eclipse of my hopes – may I be sacrificed for you

For I sought sustenance after leaving you, in want,
For I have sought provision after you in poverty
And after parting from you, I praised the habitual liar.
And praised after parting from you, the unfaithful
