Will glory scatter tomorrow, though now united,
Tomorrow glory will yearn as it is complete,
and the abode of praise be reduced to open ground,
And the abode of praise will return as it is a garden.

with Ibrahim's departure, his bounty borne
With the journey of Abraham, he carries his generosity,
by the Euphrates' bounty, both awing and overawed?
The generosity of the Euphrates, splendid and fearful.

Setting forth, he is borne by Basran vessels urged onward with song,
Heading with it to the visionary defiance,
rough-reined, with no girth-straps upon them.
The rough times, they have no fatigue for them.

Headlong, when they take to the ways of night travel,
Passion, when the causes of bliss are connected,
their quickened pace crosses the trackless wastes.
Its elevated travel cuts short the disputes.

No month is more hostile than Rabiʿ; indeed,
No month is more hostile than spring, it
a spring will depart from us in Rabiʿ.
Will show for us the spring after the spring.
سَأُقيمُI shall stay بَعدَكَafter you عِندَwith غَيرَكِsomeone other than you عالِماًknowing

After you, I shall stay with someone else, knowing
After you I will stay with someone else knowing,
with utter certainty that I shall be neglected.
The knowledge of reality, that I will be lost.

And separation will leave your benefactions
And works for you that dreams will leave,
as though they were camp traces and dwelling sites.
As if they are drawings and meadows.
وَذَكَرتَand you remembered واجِبَwhat is due to حُرمَتيmy honor فَحَفِظتَهاso you upheld it
فَلَئِنso if indeed نَسيتُكَI forget you إِنَّنيindeed I لَمُضيعُsurely neglectful
You remembered the respect due to me and upheld it;
And you recalled the sanctity of my duty so you protected it
so if I forget you, I am surely neglectful.
So if I forget you, I am indeed lost.

After you, I shall bid farewell to kindness and lavish gifts,
I will bid farewell to kindness after you, by God,
now that parting from you and farewell have come.
When separation from you arrived and farewell.

وَلَوَand even if انَّthat دِجلَةَthe Tigris ليmine عَلَيكَfor you دُموعُtears
In longing, I shall deem my tears for you too few,
And I will make the tears flow for you abundantly,
even if the Tigris were my tears for you.
If only I had for you tears like the Tigris.

And it is strange that you have gone afar, yet there still lingers
Of wonders is that you came and my heart did not
my anguish upon my inward parts, still fresh.
Grieve for the beloved and that is wonderful.
وَسَيَنزِعُand will turn away العُشّاقُlovers عَنfrom أَحبابِهِمtheir beloveds

And lovers will turn away from their beloveds
The lovers will tear their skin off for their loved ones,
with fortitude, but I cannot turn away from your bounty.
While I have no will to part from you.

So when you depart, I shall depart from a house where, when
So when you leave, I will leave a house where
generosity is bestowed, its neighbor is denied,
If generosity is shown, its people are prevented.

The estrangement of Al-Hasan ibn Sahl, it
greets the morning with my access to it cut off.
Comes and goes while after it is severed.

Rather, would that I knew: will you see me saying,
Rather, I wonder, will I say:
“Will the good nights return?”
Do the good nights have a return?

By my remembrance of you despite the distance, while between us lie
And remembering you from afar, between us
Iraq's land and its navigable sea,
Is the land of Iraq and its sailed sea.

may a people ransom you, among whom none is found
A people ransom you that cannot be found among them
seen or heard of in glory.
Visible nor heard glory.

They were cheated out of lasting honor by a supposition
They are deceived from lasting honor, assuming
of theirs: that the giver is the one deceived.
From them that the giver is the deceived one.

Their dispositions kept watch over their wealth through the night,
Their natures have spent the night on their money
as though they were breastplates and coats of mail.
As if they are armors and shields.

They were content with easy deeds and were led to believe
They sufficed with easily obtained deeds and pretended
that noble virtues are self-restraint and contentment.
That virtues are chastity and contentment.
كَلّاnot so! وَكُلُّand every مُقَصِّرٍone who falls short مُتَجَهوِرٍloud-voiced

No! Every loud-voiced man who falls short
No! And every lazy vulgar one
makes his seven circuits at the Hatim.
His circumambulating the Shrine is a week.
لاnot يَبلُغُattains العَلياءَthe heights غَيرُother than مُتَيَّمٍone enslaved by love

None reaches the heights save one enamored
None reaches the most high except the hopeful one,
of attaining them, who disobeys and obeys for their sake.
Who obeys and disobeys it in reaching it.

He emulates you in the honor you adorned
It tells you of the honor you have adorned
with glory, knowing that it will spread abroad.
Yourself with the glory, knowing it will spread.

A character whose excellence and splendor you brought forth
A mannerism you have come with, in its merit and craft,
by nature, and it emerged as though crafted.
Naturally, so it came as if it is manufactured.

And a tale of your glory was so surpassingly beautiful
And a conversation of glory about you, its beauty went to excess
that we thought it was fabricated.
That we thought it was fabricated.
