Who will tell al-Ta'i, while he is encamped
at white al-Hirah or Kufan,
أَنَّthat الزِيادَةَthe increase يَومَthe day رُمتَyou sought زِيادَتيan increase for me
عادَتresulted عَلَيَّfor me بِأَكبَرِin the greatest النُقصانِloss
that the increase, when you sought to increase my share,
brought upon me the greatest loss?
قَدindeed كانَit would have been غُنماًa gain لَوif قَنِعتُI had been content بِقَدرِهِwith its amount
فيin أَنthat يَصِحَّbe secured وَتَخلُصَand be received outright المِأَتانِthe two hundred
It would have been a gain, had I been content with its amount,
for the two hundred to be secured and received outright.
فَالآنَso now قَدindeed رَجَعَتhave returned إِلَيَّto me جَوارِحيmy limbs
وَيَديand my hand مَطِيَّةَa mount خَيبَةٍdisappointment وَلِسانيand my tongue
So now my limbs have returned to me—
my hand and tongue—as a mount for disappointment.
كَيفَhow الخُروجُsetting out إِلىto الشَآمِal-Sham وَعِندَهُand in his possession
زاديmy provisions وَراحِلَتيand my riding mount اللَذاthe two that فاتانيboth eluded me
How can I set out for al-Sham, when he holds
my provisions and my mount, both lost to me?
